Unwired, can now close mouth, still slight chin "dimple

#1 Post by HokieTay »

Okay I was unwired today. Before that I could definitely tell my profile was fixed, bite is corrected, can breath through my nose, "gummyness" is gone etc.

However, now I can close my lips together (they're still swollen though), but I noticed there is still some slight dimpling on the chin. Maybe still some lip incompetence? It's not a HUGE deal, def MUCH better than it was before. I am wondering though... will this get any better?

Yes, still have some swelling. This Monday will be 2 weeks since my surgery. I am still pretty swollen in my cheeks and somewhat in my chin/lower area, but it has gone down a lot.

My surgeon told me that my lips probably won't meet together naturally (like resting). When I am at rest or at ease now there is the slightest opening in my mouth. I can put them together though and I am comfortable, but still have the "dimple" on my chin. My lips are also a little swollen still I think.

lol that pretty much me now. I still have some puffyness in my cheeks but it has gone down quite a bit, I have a bit of swelling that appeared this week but its not so horribly bad as it was before. ah well I'm sure over time it will all get better for us.

I think that is because it takes awhile to retrain the muscles that have been used to being in one place for so many years. In almost 9 months, mine has changed quite a bit and is still changing. Sometimes I have a little puckering, sometimes I don't....so I think it's just a muscle memory thing. Give it some time.

Okay, I thought it might have something to do with the muscle. I know the littlest things will change over time. Just gotta be patient! Thanks for the advice!

Hey Hokie is it possible to show before and after pic?

I have the same problem, lip incompetence, I actually went with the removal of 4 tooth but no surgery, and I'm not seeing improvement in my lip competence, only straight teeth.

Your lips might not be closing all the way because the surgical hooks and braces push them out like 1 mm.

I dont know what you mean by dimple. I am so freakin happy you got your wires off though.

ya i kinda figured it have to do something with muscle so I am overally worried about it right now. Plus I have a bite splint covering my upper teeth to keep my upper jaw in place so that could be keeping my mouth open a bit cause it does seem to be a bit bulky.

Well here is my album, which has before and after pictures. The after pictures charts each day. The last few have some where my mouth is closed where you can kind of see what I am talking about, but it is hard to see without looking up close.

HokieTay, your jaw looks a lot like mine both before and after. I think you look great. I also found myself getting discouraged the first few months because of the chin dimpling. Even now, I sometimes find I'm holding my muscles where it dimples but it does get better. The main thing I kept telling myself was that my bite was finally in the right place and I trust that my muscles will eventually figure it out.

Thanks Ozzy. I know it's a waiting game and I have to be patient. Everything will eventually settle where it should, but it will take time. Now if only I wasn't one of the most impatient people alive.... haha!
