orthognathic surgery after braces?

#1 Post by VistaXP »

If we still have issues with receding chin, can orthognathic surgery be done after braces or does it have to be before?

A receding chin may be able to be masked or even fixed with a genioplasty, which is going to be considered cosmetic (i.e., insurance will not cover it). My assumption is either an OMS or Plastic Surgeon could accomplish that procedure.

However, if the receding chin is due to a jaw deficiency, you often have to look at a procedure such as a BSSO, which needs to be done by an OMS. If you needed this type of procedure, I can almost assure you that you'd need to have braces on both before and after the procedure, as it is sure to change your bite.

Bottom line, it all depends on the degree of the deficiency and if it is jaw/skeletal related or really just aesthetic.

Good Luck,
