dannym1980,

anything that anyone here says would be a best guess. I think most people with open bites have both a Lefort I and a BSSO. At least one of those is definitely in order.

Have you seen a surgeon and/or orthodontist? That is the first step...

Be well, and at peace,

Phil

It depends -- do you have any other issue besides the open bite (narrow upper jaw, over/underbite, etc.)? I have an anterior open bite (about 5mm) and I'm getting a Lefort and BSSO. The BSSO is not for the open bite but for an over bite though, so you might not need that. I'm not sure exactly what they do for anterior open bite but it seems they would take some bone off the back (I don't know what it's called but if I had to give it a name I'd call it posterior impaction or something) and then tilt the front down to close the anterior bite.

I have a 5 mm Open Bite and was told that I will need: Lefort I osteotomy surgery and a good chance I will also need mandibular osteotomy (lower jaw surgery).

With the braces it will be a close to 2 yr process.

Hi,

I have an anterior open bite of about 6 mm and already 3 orthos tried to get it
better using braces. Up to now and after trying during more than 2 years, I do
not see even the beginning of improvement. So, if your open bite is 10 mm, then
I am almost sure that this is way beyond the possibilities orthodontics can give.
So, like Sue said, you need a Lefort 1 surgery. They raise the back of your upper
arch, or indeed, do a posterior impaction. I think that is your only option. I think
I see that your lowers are positioned in front of your uppers. Or at least about top
to top. When they'll impact, the lower jaw will be able to close more but you will
experience autorotation. Maybe because of that you'll get an underbite. And then
a BSSO is needed to correct that. So, my guess is upper and lower jaw surgery.
Only orthodontics will not be enough.

thanx all
