Hi all,
I have had an underbite my whole life and am now at the age where I could be considered for surgery.
I met with an orthodontist who said I have a 5mm underbite, with a 7mm crossbite, facial asymmetry (chin markedly to the left) and mild midface flattening due to an under developed upper jaw. I would need braces for about 6 months pre-surgery to decompensate the arches, then bimaxillary surgery and possible geniplastly followed by 6-12 months of braces.
What do you think of my underbite? It does bother me and I have jaw pain from time to time, as well as some slight uneven teeth wear which could get worse. Luckily my teeth are fairly straight - I was just given the wrong jaws for them!

Has anyone gone through with surgery for a bite of this severity, and did you find it worthwhile? I am about 75% sure that I want to go through with this but have some time to make up my mind closer to getting braces.

No one?
Happy to hear opinions from anyone thinking of doing the same, or has done it already.

From the pic, the dx and treatment plan look pretty reasonable. Except for the underbite, it's pretty similar to mine.
You may want to ask if it's possible to treat with only upper. My goatee did a lot to hid my lower rightward cant, and the OS said he could get functionally identical results with only doing upper, although I was approved for, and he would have agreed to do, bimax w/ genio.
If you are in the US, make sure to do your research with your medical insurance before starting ortho treatment. You don't want to go through pre-surgery ortho and find your medical (not dental) plan won't cover your surgery.

Thanks for the reply. My beard is partly there to hide the jaw asymmetry as well.
I'll be sure to check on my insurance. I'm in Australia so the coverage is limited for these type of operations, though it is there.
Cheers!
