It's been just less than two weeks since my
Maxillofacial operation to correct an open bite.
I've lost nearly 8kg in weight whilst following a
liquid diet. I'm seeing my consultant next week
is there anyone who has or experienced significant
weight loss. I was told that weight loss is
expected but is this too much loss in such a short time?
What is acceptable weightless?

Re: What is acceptable weightless?
I was 52kg to begin with and got down 45kg in a week after my surgery and then stayed at that weight for the 4 weeks I was on liquids. 6 weeks later and I've probably put half the weight I lost back on now that I'm not on the liquid diet (still can't chew though). I've read of people loosing up to 35lbs (which I think is about 15kg). If you're worried try and add high calorie things to your liquid diet such as full fat milk, full fat cream etc.. and have those meal replacement drinks too. They also recommended that you have about 6 'meals' a day but I never managed that. You should put most of the weight back on when you can start to eat again so I wouldn't worry too much.
Re: What is acceptable weightless?
I would not worry too much, as a lot of it is probably water weight. When you're not eating things like grains, and starches like potatoes, your body can become less inflamed/bloated, and lose a lot of water weight. When you go back to your normal diet, you'll probably gain it back quickly. It's very common for people to lose many pounds of water weight at the beginning of any diet, including a mandatory liquid diet.
You didn't mention how much you weighed to begin with. If you're already very thin, then maybe 15 pounds in two weeks is too much. But if you carry around extra weight anyway, losing a little over a pound a day shouldn't be harmful. Especially because, like I said, it's probably largely water weight.

Re: What is acceptable weight loss
When I started I was an overweight 108Kg.
Following the braces, Sarpa and now my final op (I hope!)
My weight has dropped to 83kg. The weight loss has been a very good additional
benefit of the treatment, and since my braces and corrective bite
journey has started I've managed to keep my weight under
control probably for the first time in my life!
Since the last operation my weight has dropped from 90kg
83kg so it's continued. I think you're right that water weight
is likely to be the main reason.
I can't wait until they remove the bands so that
I can have some soft foods as my guts are feeling
wretched.
Thanks for your comments.
