Total Subapical Osteotomy

#1 Post by samus82 »

Hi guys,

I have recently been speaking to NHS orthodontists and surgeons regarding treatment. Originally the orthodontist I was seeing thought the best course of action would be orthodontic treatment followed by lower jaw surgery. However the surgeon I saw did not believe that there would be much benefit from that as I don't have much lower jaw to work with. He did however suggest a procedure called a Total Subapical Osteotomy, which basically involves the cutting of the entire lower jaw along a vertical axis, moving it forward and also having bone transplanted from my hip to fill in the gap. He has said that there is not much information as the procedure hasn't been used frequently enough.

I have managed to find a few medical journals/papers online that discuss the procedure itself and results after, but no information from individuals.

Has anyone heard of this before or have any experience of the technique? It would be really helpful to know.

Thanks
