Genioplasty After Bi-Max?

#1 Post by chicago29 »

Hi There,

I am wondering if anybody out there elected to have a genioplasty after they had double jaw surgery?

As a refresher, my surgeon worked up my case with and without the genioplasty. I didn't see the final projections until I was in the surgical holding area on the day of surgery. At the time I didn't see any benefit from the genioplasty, and I elected not to have it done. I wasn't drugged yet, but I have to admit I didn't have a clear mind when I made the decision. I had to use every ounce of energy to stay there and not run away from the hospital, so the thought of more cutting was something I think I avoided without looking at the situation practically or realistically.

Well, fast forward 6 months post-op. I went back to my OS today and did a workup on a sliding genioplasty. The prediction model was APPRECIATIVELY better, and now I really want to have the genioplasty done. I don't feel that my current results are "bad", but they certainly appear to be better with a genioplasty. I think that it's possible that I didn't get as much movement as we thought we might from the double-jaw surgery, but my bite is pretty good and my smile looks good so I have to assume that things were moved in the proper way. My surgeon always said that modeling might call for a large movement, but that doesn't always mean that's the right approach.

Anyway, has anybody else been through a genioplasty "after the fact"? I know I'll have swelling, bruising, and all that fun stuff, but I was told it would be NOTHING like the double-jaw surgery and that I'd be fully recovered in 2 weeks. Also, no restricted diet but perhaps liquids/soft foods only for a couple of days.

If anybody has done this I'd appreciate your thoughts on a "genioplasty only" recovery, and if you felt that the procedure made your final outcome better.

As always, I appreciate everybody's thoughts and insights.

Regards

Hi Chicago29 - remember me from last summer constantly whining about infection, etc? Can't believe 7 months have passed since my bimax now!

I haven't had a genio but I am due for one this summer and all I can say is if your profile still bothers you/isn't what you want then go for it. My surgeon is going to be giving me an implant instead of a sliding genio. He is also doing my nose to balance everything out (I feel it sticks out more now my face is shorter)

How are you getting on post-surgery life?

Hi redblondefox!

Yes, I remember you...glad you're doing well. You'll have to come back to this post and let me know how your genio goes. I think the implant is much less invasive, but still it will be good to get an opinion. I haven't quite decided if I'm going to do this or not, but I think I will. I will probably just have to wait until late Fall as I am not sure I'll have the availability until then.

As for me, I'm getting along fine. Overall I'm happy with my final results, but I certainly have had some things I'll live with forever (sensitive teeth, etc). I'd absolutely do it again if I had to, so I can't say I have any regrets.

Anyway, best of luck for your summer surgeries and please be sure to post back and let me know how they went.

Take Care!

I'm gonna try one more bump of this to see if anybody else has had a post-surgical sliding genioplasty...If so I'd love to hear about it!

Haven't had my surgery yet, but I'm curious to know the answer to this. I just had to transfer my treatment to a different hospital as we moved house and whereas my old surgeon had planned Lefort and BSSO, the new one wants my wisdom teeth out, then Lefort, BSSO and genio. He says people who get 'good' results without the genio often come back for genio later in order to get a 'great' result. In his opinion it's better to get the whole lot done in one go, but that gives me a dilemma: I can see why he thinks it's better just to get the whole lot over and done with, but if that's the case why isn't genio always offered with jaw surgery - do they just hope the chin will be fine, or do they think having the genio at the same time is just too much surgery all in one go? Anyone had genio later and wished they'd had it done at the same time as jaw surgery?

BTW Chicago29 - am I right in thinking you have your own webpage somewhere? I feel like I've stumbled across it and that we have/had similar issues with open bite. At one point I was following your story (I think) because it was like my own problem, but when we moved I had loads of computer technical issues and ended up losing heaps of data/passwords etc. I was previously registered here as Iwanttosmile! but I've lost track of who I was communicating with.
