before and after photos

#1 Post by december08changed »

I had upper jaw surgery about 2 years ago to fix an underbite. I had one follow up appointment and everything was good. Then about a year after that I was told I needed to get my wisdom teeth pulled. It was done by the same surgeon who did the surgery and he decided to take some pictures, but he never asked to do some before? I was just wondering what surgeons use these pics for and if anyone else had before and after pics after surgery?

Pictures or XRays? My surgeon had xrays taken after I had my splint removed to make sure they didn't miss any wire fragments and that everything was still in place.

They could be using them for an academic purpose. If their hospital is a learning hospital then they are showing their interns what people look like before and after surgery, and before and after getting wisdom teeth removed (if any change at all).

I think you may be fearing that your doctor thinks something may be awry. But if he hasn't said anything yet, I'm sure there is nothing for you to worry about. They just take the pictures so they have some form of evidence.

No, they were just regular pictures of my face. I'm not sure if he does this with every patient, since he didn't take any after pictures until I had to get my wisdom teeth pulled, 2 years after my jaw surgery. I'm kind of paranoid about this for some reason. I didn't think anything of it at the time but I realized after that I don't want my pictures to end up in a textbook or in a classroom or something like that. Did anyone else have their surgeon take before and after pictures and keep them? Is there anything I can do to prevent him from sharing my photos with anyone else? PLEASE HELP!

coughycup,

I believe they ALL do this for their records. Both my OS and Ortho did. Kind of like x-rays. If you have problems later, they'll have something to show your progress and refer to.

Anyway, they'll give you a copy of the photos if you want it. They should only use them with your permission and I know they'd respect your concerns if you didn't want to participate. Just let them know. All kind of privacy and ethics issues would be involved with displaying your pics.

Lo
