People haven't been rude to me, just stupid. "Bet you'll be glad when you get all that off!" No, bet I'll be glad when you shut up about it! lol I'm paying big bucks for this and I want it as near perfect as possible and I have the patience to see to it I get it!

My bro who is a paraplegic and uses a wheel chair, gets the same garbage from people meaning to be funny. "You should get a power chair!" No, they cost well over $20,000, and the van to transport them costs $60,000 and gets like 12 gallons to the mile!!! Plus rolling this is my daily cardio and my arms work fine...shudduppa you' face!

Grin and bare it, eh?

I feel pretty lucky - when people realize I have braces, they usually ask why I got them. I have really large gaps between all my top teeth, and I was REALLY good at hiding them. Now - the braces make it more difficult to conceal the top teeth.
Working with middle school kids - I am definitely in the majority of people with braces... I am the media specialist - and of the five adults that work in my building, three of us have braces. So---the rude comments have been pretty minimal...

I was trying to buy some Camp Fire Girl cookies from a little girl -- she looked like she was FOUR years old, and she said, ALL surprised and pointing at me: "You have rubberbands in your mouth!" And then proceeded to work her mouth all fish like while she stared at my mouth. And I explained there was something wrong with some of my teeth and a dentist was fixing them.... I didn't think she was rude, she was darling. I had to buy cookies right then and there. Her mother was almost turning purple from embarrassment at her daughter's candor, though. I still giggle when I think of her little face and the fishy mouth she made....

I have only had braces for a bit over a month, but the comment I get a lot is: "Ughh, weird. Why did you get braces in the first place?" -- Granted, my teeth were fairly straight (I have a pretty deep overbite), but I find it really inconsiderate for people to be so judgey about why I got braces in the first place. I figured people would be a little more supportive (MOST people are -- but not everyone).

So far the people I've had contact with at stores, the bank, paying bills, either act like they don't notice, or give me an extra big smile. That's the upper midwest for you. :-#)

Has anyone read the first post on this thread? I really can't believe a university professor said that to a student in her class!!!! I'm a uni professor and am shocked that any teacher would say such a thing!!!

I have got a lot of comments but none really rude. Japanese people often presume that all foreigners are very open about everything and will ask and say things to me that they would never dream of saying to another Japanese person. So far I've got:

- I didn't know adults could get braces.
- Don't they hurt a lot?
- You must be rich. Perhaps I should have stayed at uni longer and got a better job.
- How much do they cost?
- How far back do they go?
- How long does it take to brush your teeth now?
- Look at my teeth. Do you think I could have braces? (This one is not good. Many Japanese people do not have the best oral hygiene, although that has improved a bit over the last 10 years.)
- My teeth wobble a bit. Do you think braces would make them stay in place. Look how much I can wobble this tooth (a 50-something-lady then proceeded to open her mouth and show me her teeth that wobbled - yikes!)
- And from one of my university students who just got hers off: "Sensei, brush and brush then wax and wax!"

Anyway, I've become very, very good at saying "I'm not a dentist. I think you should see one" in Japanese.

Yes, it is really inconsiderate....some people are just rude and a bit socially inept.

A new fashion statement. Actually, in SE Asia it is a status symbol to have braces and there are instructions on the net on who to make fake ones that look realistic.

I can sort of understand where people are coming from with the 'you didn't need braces' thing. Its like when someone told you they lost weight and you have to say 'we'll you certainly didn't need to' otherwise you feel like people might think you mean 'good job fatty!' There are too many hidden meanings!!! Its amazing how many people told me I didn't need braces who are now saying 'your teeth are so much better!' I think its especially common when your teeth are pretty straight but your bite is wrong - people don't notice a problem with how you look to start with but they notice the improvement when its fixed.

When I told my best friend that I had got them she said to me "How come you didn't have them when you were younger"-I felt the embarrasment as it meant I had to explain that I had a severe dental phobia and that is why I didn't do anything back then.

Over than that nothing. Just stick from my family saying about how much I had paid to sort out my teeth :-(

"Your gap is not going to close." (-_-)

"Your are going to look weird after your gap is closed" (-_-)

"Don't be mad when you look less pretty without the gap" (x_x)

I have also been indirectly called brace face. SMH.
