Has any one experienced this type of pain before?

I sat down to eat my dinner the other night and out of no where I got a severe neuralgic pain on one of my lower molars. Ever since then the pain has been getting steadily stronger and getting triggered more frequently.
It is nothing like the pain you experience after an adjustment, the closest thing I can describe it to is a sensitive teeth kind of pain but the most severe form I've ever experienced. There is a second or two delay before I feel the pain then it builds up and spreads along that side of the lower jaw before finally subsiding about 5 seconds later.
The strange thing is, if i bite down on the tooth it doesn't hurt at all but if I'm trying to eat, it is really painful as though the hot/cold triggers it off, also a cold draft and brushing my teeth triggers it as well.
I just wondered if any one else had experienced this and if it was something to do with my braces or if I need to book into the dentist.
