Hi Everyone,
Following on from my 'gum & diet coke' post, I'm just curious to know whether anyone has continued to munch on the 'no-no' foods, despite them not being advisable?!
If Yes - Did anything bad happen?
If No - What do you miss the most?
I miss nuts, raw carrot and (a bit of a strange one...) munching ice cubes!!
Maybe between us all we can find some foods which aren't actually
that bad afterall!!

Well, this list is going to be LOOOOONG, so brace yourself (pun not intended).
Gum: You can chew sugar free.
Pop:Just drink it anyway, but wait 10 or so minutes before you brush because if the chemicals are still on your teeth they can be rubbed into the enamel.
Taffy/ Chewy Stuff:If you s.uck on it it will eventually dissolve.
Sweets: Just brush and you'll be fine.
Hard candy/ Ice cubes: S.uck on them, but don't crunch.
Carrots/ Apples: Cut into small pieces.
Nuts: Chew carefully (but they'll still get stuck everywhere).
If I left anything out (I'm sure I didn't) don't hesitate to tell me.

I miss popcorn, ribs, and bagels...
I have been munching on pepperidge farm white chocolate macadamia cookies; I know I shouldn't, but white chocolate on a cookie?? It's my weakness

Oh, I forgot popcorn! Eat carefully and look for unpopped kernals.
Corn on the cob: Eat normally (It just gets stuck in the front REALLY bad)

I haven't really given up anything...but the clean up procedure isn't too fun.....oh! wait! I did give one thing up: See's California Brickle Bar....kinda a hard toffee candy with nuts in it, covered in chocolate. My favorite candy ever.....can't chew 'em anymore though.

My diet hasn't changed at all - I still eat sweets and popcorn and crisps and stuff (I never have liked fizzy pop or chewing gum though), but the way I eat them has changed - I'll cut somethings up first or bite using my teeth at the side rather than the front.
I've had no problems. The only time brackets have come off (twice) was while I was brushing/flossing.

I have eaten just about everything on the no-no list and I know what my limitations are. Crusty, crunchy anything hurts to chew after a while for me, nuts get all stuck in my braces, ice hurts to chew (I don't have the patience just to leave it in my mouth), and Oh beloved popcorn!!!! How I miss thee! My last run in with popcorn left me with some yucky popcorn hulls in my teeth and braces that were not that easy to get out. Overall, broccoli and spinach have been the worse because leafy greens wrapped around metal in your mouth is not always a pretty picture for those around you.

There's nothing really that I've not been able to eat, apart from really hard things.
Popcorn so couldn't give that up even though you spend forever working the little bits out.
Corn on the cobb, what a nightmare mess, never again.
I'm very wary of bread and sandwiches as it just gets stuck everywhere and is awful. I really miss Subway's but it's just too much of a hassle so stuck with their salads for now.

I had a bunch of peanuts the day after I got my braces. They're small enough to slowly break down. The rest of the stuff on the do not eat list are not things I eat anyway.

I had braces for nearly two years...haha and i never stopped eating the "no-no" foods. Corn-on-the-cob was basically the only thing I cut out because I didn't like having to brush thoroughly afterwards. But I ate popcorn, nuts, bagels, ice, and allll sorts of candy...and never broke a bracket!
Not that I condone such awful orthodontic behavior....

My ortho did actually say that I was fine to chew gum, just make sure it's sugar-free.
Yep, I've eaten all the things they say you shouldn't including ribs, popcorn, nuts, raw veg. Apart from an incident with a giant hard lollipop that bent my archwire out of shape for 12 hours (it miraculously popped back into place the next day and I was spared a telling off by my ortho) it's been ok. I don't seem to have problems with bits getting stuck in my brace either.

As for gum, I was *very* hesitant to chew it at first. The list of foods that were forbidden that my ortho gave me scared me into not relishing these once taken-for-granted delights.
But now, I'm chewing gum like the gum-chewing fiend I was before. Of coure, this time around it *is* sugar free. Freedent is an excellent brand. Never gets stuck on the hooks that I have on a few of my brackets.
I'm quite lucky in the fact that I've never had a cavity despite drinking copious amounts of diet Pepsi and gnawing on all sorts of sweets. However, I'm not sure how much longer that will last. I'm 21 now and I know that it's definitely at this point that most biological functions and resilience start going downhill. I'm trying to ween myself from the bottle. lol
NOTHING has happened so far as consequence of my diet. Just last night I ate a ground beef and mushroom pizza (YUM!). I looked at the crust, questioning myself if I should nibble at it or not. I did! Nothing happened, but I did have to work at it considerably slower as opposed to my days of before sans braces.
Just be careful with whatever you eat. You can do it!
