New to braces - questions about bite!

#1 Post by Pineapple88 »

Hello!

I’ve had braces (tops only for the next 8 weeks) on for two weeks after I had bite issues from doing a year of Invisalign. Anyway it’s been a adjustment.

At the moment only one molar on one side touches when I go to bite down. Is that normal for the beginning? I’m worried I’ll damage it. Also does anyone’s bite change from in the morning when you first wake up to when you are upright? When I first wake up in the morning I have my molars touching on both sides. Worried I have jaw issues 😑. Also, my front teeth especially feel really loose so it’s weird to brush they as I can feel them move. Is that all normal? I also wouldn’t even try biting down on them right now. My teeth are all still pretty tender even 2 weeks in! Please give me some hope lol.

Thanks!

Hi, Pineapple.

It seems to me that your teeth are doing exactly what they should be doing right now--moving. Unless you have severe pain or discomfort, you likely don't have anything to worry about.

Fixing one's bite involves the teeth doing a lot of bumping and grinding on their way to their proper positions (this is my third time in braces, so I've had some experience with this). My bite seems to change on a daily basis, including the molars.

Good luck!

Hello! I also have braces due to my teeth getting all messed up because of Smile Direct aligners. It's normal for things to not feel quite right from time to time during your adjustments. At my last one, I couldn't close my mouth without biting right into both cheeks for a week or so. Every new adjustment brings new fun like this.
Get some wax for relief and have patience.

Shifting bite is part of the treatment. Things might look, feel, or bite worse; before they look feel or bite better.

Only biting on one molar is time to use caution. Be gentle on it. There can be a lot of force generated on that one tooth.

Something to talk to your ortho about at your next appointment.
Round 3 (lifetime) Damon stainless applied 3/16/20 (after 4 weeks attempting invisalign)
Upper ceramics 5/21/14, Lower stainless 5/28/14
Double jaw surgery was 6/18/15. Estimated time Jan 2016; still on at my 2 year anniversary...
Braces removed 7/20/18; upper and lower Hawley and Essix retainers with bonded lower too.
I'm emphatically against extraction orthodontics!

exactly my case for different bites when sleeping and in upright position. I went to a tmj specialist. She hold my chin and shook it and keep told me to relax. After that i was told to bite. The overjet is 5.5mm. When I try to bite by myself on daily basis, the overjet is 3.5mm. The dentist said the normal difference should be only 0.5-1mm. She said that I have hypermobile joint so the joint can retrude beyond normal and it makes me have multiple bites. When i sleep, my jaw will drop to 5.5m. After I wake up and in upright position, it needs around 15 minutes for it to go back to 3.5 mm by itself. She also said that journal about hypermobile joint is rarely but there are a lot of people have this condition.
