My TMJ is back after braces treatment :(

#1 Post by Heartofdarkness »

Hello! I got my braces taken off about 4 months ago. Never made a post here because I'm not particularly happy with the result. However, before I got braces I had severe TMJ problems. To the point where I had to be conscious about opening my mouth the "right" way so it wouldn't lock. While in braces all issues disappeared, I was very happy.

Now, about a month ago, I started getting my problems back again. I think it gets triggered while I'm sleeping because my jaw drops. When I wake up, it's really bad and it gives me headache. During the day, it eases up and although the jaw pops it doesn't hurt.

Is it normal for TMJ to re-appear after treatment? I know I should visit my ortho but I just don't wanna because I feel they messed things up. Also I'm scared they're gonna say there's nothing to do, perhaps only surgery.

Any advice?

As you suspect a visit to the ortho is in order, and perhaps also a TMJ specialist. Even if they say that there is nothing that can be done (which I seriously doubt is true), you could probably find some sort of binder on line to help you keep your mouth closed while you sleep. Perhaps your ortho would have some conservative options -- perhaps some sort of physical therapy for that joint. Best of luck to you.
