Getting approval for IPR

Hi all,

At my next appointment with my orthodontist I’m going to ask about IPR. Currently I’ve got my overjet down from 9mm to 5mm, but my extraction gaps are nearly closed and it looks like I’ll only get another 1mm (max) before no more movement can be made.

So far I’m really happy with my results, but if I could gain an extra 1mm on top of this I think my smile would look almost perfect.

With this in mind, who actually approves IPR? Is this something my dentist would need to approve first, or can my orthodontist just go ahead and do it (subject to him thinking it’s a good idea)?

My orthodontist just told me I needed IPR done, and I went along with it. I didn’t ask so there was no approval to speak of. I’d imagine your orthodontist will make the call regarding whether or not IPR is appropriate for you.

Doesn't approval for treatment ultimately default to you, the patient?

@Speck - Yes and no, but I would take on board any recommendations against it if my dentist, for instance, thought it was poor judgement. I’ll ask my orthodontist what his thoughts are anyway. He’s never mentioned it in the past, and it’s only from reading this forum that I know it’s an option. Thanks

Your ortho makes the call, not your dentist. Of course you as the patient has the right to refuse. While your ortho is the specialist in moving teeth he or she will also take into consideration whether it will be functionally sound, what is the safe amount to shave off and if ipr is even at all suited for your case.
