Palate expander key won't go into the hole

Palate expander key won't go into the hole

Hi,
My daughter just got palate expander and I was able to turn it twice correctly. Today,all of sudden, I see the hole but I can't seem to get the key all the way in. Only the tiny tip of the key will go in. Any ideas as to how to fix the problem? Thanks in advance!
