Still in braces - but my teeth are starting to flare

#1 Post by lizziebeth1028 »

Howdy, I'm on my last wire and have elastics from top canines to back molars. My front teeth are starting to have a flared look! I did not have extractions - I had the IPR scaling and filing of teeth to make room for overcrowding and one fang tooth. Now I'm starting to freak out thinking my ortho has screwed up and I should have had the extractions! I've voiced concerns my last 2 visits that I feel I've developed a flare in front and he says no he doesn't think so. After reading some posts on here regarding the 'dreaded flare', I"m definitely going to be more ascertive my next visit. Braces are not due off yet (I'm barely 8 months in) but I'm going to make damn sure they don't come off until I'm satisfied.

My question - am I freaking out too early. Is it possible that the elastics will pull everything in and correct the flare or did I screw up with not having extractions!!!!???

Probably you wont need premolar extraction if your profile is nearly straight. I wore Class II elastics for a long time but I received a treatment with 4 premolars extracted as I suffered from lip incompetence and a weak chin in addition to flaring teeth. If your lips are competent you dont need premolar extraction.
