tonuge crib

my dentist and orthodontist have recommended that I get a tongue crib before starting braces. I got the appliance put on today and my orthodontist told me that I would have adjustment period. she said to expect some drooling and some words hard to say, that I'd have a lisp for a while. So far, it is not uncomfortable at all, though feels weird to have something in my mouth. It looks a lot like a retainer except for the metal spikes coming up. Has anyone had a tongue crib put on and if so, what was your experience like?

Good luck with it.
I am getting one soon and I am dreading it.
My ortho wants the tongue crib for me however she gave the option to get tongue spurs to try if it works although she would rather have me get the crib.
How is it been a little first hand insight would be great.
If I may ask your age? I am 37

thanks for the reply. I am 51. so far, no too bad, though still drooling quite a bit and lisp is noticeable. Appliance itself is fairly comfortable. I'm doing some exercises to help keep the tongue where it is supposed to be as well. If not enough progress, like you, I will have to get the spurs, possibly on bottom as well as top. They are evaluating in two months to see if enough progress or have to go that route.
keep me posted on how you progress

Let's hope it all goes well, on my case it is the other way around, my ortho wants the crib, I wanted to try something a little less conspicuous so she gave me the choice of spurs, however she is not totally convinced and said that if they don't work on goes the crib. She even mentioned a crib with spurs as a last resort.
I haven't stared yet but will soon most likely mid June, and have till then to make a choice on the spurs or crib. Everything is ready for the treatment to start (maybe at most new impressions since the teeth might have moved a little bit) but I have had to travel a lot for work these past few months so I decided to start the treatment as soon as I am settled without traveling for at least 2 months to get used spurs or crib and the first check ups. also to be close to the ortho just in case.
How has been peoples reaction to it?
Is it noticeable when you talk? i mean physically besides the lisp.
Good luck keep us posted
I will as soon as I get started

sounds like a plan to do this when things have slowed down work wise. I don't have braces in yet, so people did notice the appliance since nothing else was in my mouth. Had I had braces, not sure anyone would have noticed. You cannot see a lot, though there is a metal bar running across the lower part of my front top teeth. The lisp is getting a bit better, but I have to slow down my speech to avoid it. I talk a lot for work, so was concerned on that, but it has not been too bad. I do keep a cup and small washcloth nearby at my desk for drooling that took place the first few days. That has lessened as well, which is great. I'll do updates as things progress and be sure to post your updates, too.

I sure will, hope it gets better, and soon I will be in the same boat.
dreading it of course but it is a necessary evil.
And as I said still pondering whether to get spurs or crib.

so, what did you end up deciding?

till pondering, but most likely will try the spurs first, they seem to be the lesser of both evils.
It is not my ortho's choice and doesn't think will work. So I am getting stuck with the tongue crib might as well try anything I can to see if I can avoid it.
She did give the choice though.
I will make the final choice when I have a final date for the treatment to start. since I am traveling a lot for work these days I'd rather have a few months without traveling before starting my treatment. Specially since I am getting such a cumbersome and bothersome device.
I will keep you posted.
How are you coping with your treatment and tongue crib?
How is your speech coming up? eating?
thanks

sounds like a plan. I'm adapting pretty well. speech is better, though still struggle with some "s" words that can sound like a lisp.
It is working according to both my ortho and speech therapist and my tongue is starting to sit in the right place. I had root canal and waiting on the final crown - have temp in and that hurts me more than the tongue crib. After that, it is braces. don't know how long I'll have on the tongue crib, but they said I'll have that and braces together for a while anyways.
