Black gums three days after getting braces. Is this normal?

#1 Post by Pixelada »

Hi All, I got braces three days ago and everything has been going well so far. I haven't even felt any pain. However, Ijust noticed that my lower gums are turning dark purple underneath my front teeth. Is this normal? Has anyone experience the same? Or should I worry?

Thanks!!!

I would definitely get in touch with your ortho or general dentist ASAP. I've not heard of this happening, and could be a serious sign. Don't freak out though, as nobody can tell you what's really going on besides your ortho/dentist :) best wishes to you! I hope everything's okay!

While I have not experienced this myself, I would say, without trying to panic you, that you should call your ortho as soon as possible and explain what is happening. It could be simple bruising. It could be a circulation issue. It could be any number of things I have no idea about. But it doesn't sound normal enough to let it go.

Hi Guys, thank you for your replies. I think I was just freaking out and now I think is just normal bruising. I have no pain and it has not gotten worse, so I am not going to worry about it. :)

I don't think bruising is normal after the application of braces, to be honest. To consider: Are you taking any anticoagulant medications (blood thinners)? I'd be more concerned about an unexpected bleed elsewhere, if you are bruising this easily. As a nurse I'd recommend you contact your orthodontist and/or primary care physician. Best of luck to you.
