"Thick" gums - normal?

#1 Post by ashgerg »

So I'm not quite sure how to describe it but one of my teeth that is not engaged in the wire yet on the bottom is half covered by my gum. Will this gum move out of the way once the tooth comes forward, or will it need to be cut? I will add a picture so you can see. Has anyone experienced this?

Although I haven't experienced this personally, a friend of mine had some of her excess gum removed by a laser cutting tool. It cut and cauterized at the same time and healed very nicely. Maybe this could be an option for you?

Check out BeautifulDisaster's story here on Archwired. She had a UL that was kind of buried back in the gum like yours, and it has come forward beautifully.

Has it always been like this, or only since getting braces? if only since getting braces, I would wait and not do anything to cut it. My son had the same thing happen in braces, but it went completely back to normal afterwards. He wasn't very compliant with flossing though, so make sure you are religious about flossing! If it's always been this way, then that's another story...

Yeah it's pretty much always been that way, but got worse with braces
