Never wear retainer during the day???

#1 Post by Ambrosia80 »

I just went to pick up my essix, and was told to only wear them at night, and *not* to wear them during the day. Has anyone ever heard of that before? I thought everyone had to wear them 24/7 at first. Should I do it anyway?

I would be really interested to know the reasons behind this instruction. I understood everyone starts with full time wear for a while and slowly reduces wear time to nights only over a course of months.

I would wear it longer. I was told to wear them 24/7 for three months. I was given the clear to switch to 10 hours a day for the upper retainer only but I still wear it longer than that. I'm concerned about not wearing my retainer for 4 days when I get my 8 crowns in a month!

It may be something to do with the fact that essix retainers cover the biting surfaces of your teeth and 24/7 wear does not give your teeth the opportunity to bite together properly. But I suggest you call your orthos office for an explanation. If you preferred to wear retainers 24/7 for a while, perhaps your ortho would make you some hawleys?

I have Hawley's and was told I only need nighttime wear (forever). At first it was 24/7 for a month.

HOWEVER, I plan to wear them as much as possible to start, anyway, mostly because I CANNOT talk with them in and it's weird.

I have had Essix retainers since 2010 and was told to wear them every night dropping down to 2-3 nights, that has worked for me. I also agree with Jem about teeth needing to bite together properly.

Best wishes
Helen

Hello!

First of all, congrutulations on your debanding, your smile looks very beautiful!!!
I also have an essix retainer (only for my uppers) and only need to wear it at night. For me this works. I even don't wear them every night (about 5 nights a week) and my retainers still fit well, so I think it is ok.
I have never worn my retainers during daytime. Hopefully this reassures you.
I do have a bonded upper and lower retainer as well, maybe that also helps. Do you have bonded retainers as well?

Every case is different. If you ortho says night-time only is fine, I don't see why not, as long as you remember!
