cankersore cures?

#1 Post by agrace90 »

I have been very lucky with my braces journey so far! Minimal pain and braces have practically vanished from my memory while still being there..until now! I have the worst sore on my inner cheek/lip area rubbing against my upper right canine with a hooked bracket. It actually hooks into the sore,it's so bad now. I have never used wax besides today to try to get some relief with no help. I have been using kanka my usual go to sore medicine with help in numbing but otherwise it rubs off within the hour from the bracket(I'd be lucky if it even lasted that long!). Any advice or medicine you recommend?! I'll take anything! I can't eat or drink without suffering. Thanks in advance!

Use the wax for sure! I love the GUM brand aloe & vitamin e wax as it's very soothing. I've had great luck with the combination of the wax and the Kanka softbrush gel together. And, don't be afraid to go back to the wax even after you're a pro. I'm 6 months into treatment and I just had to go back to wax for a couple of weeks due to some shifting that recently occurred.

dip a cotton swab in vinegar and apply to the sore. it will hurt for some seconds but its worth the relief.

My routine was Gly-Oxide (or generic equiv.) every time I brushed my teeth, wax during the day, and Rincinol at night. (Rincinol is a soothing mouth rinse made by GUM. It's hard to find, but a pharmacy should be able to order it.)

You will get through this; it just takes time.

I got this 'recipe' from a Pharmacist. He said it is an OTC version of a prescription.

Mix equal parts of liquid antacid and liquid antihistamine (like Benedryl). I usually do 1/2 tsp at a time.

The anti-acid helps calm the acidity of the sore and the antihistamine helps relieve the inflammation. If it really hurts, add a third part of oral pain reliever like Anbesol.

The wax is a godsend! I put some over the pokey bracket before I went to bed and had no problems while I was sleeping. I'll continue to do that until the wax runs out

Benzodent is great! You can find it at most drugstores and grocery stores. It is a thick, paste like ointment that sticks to the sore and usually heals overnight. Apply with a q-tip.

I was having the same issue. I bot these things at Walgreens. They are basically a "patch" that goes over the sore....it actually sticks on like a band-aid and stays there. It lasts (eating, drinking and sleeping) over 24 hours, and it won't allow the bracket, or anything else to poke into what feels like the open wound. They are not cheap $11 for 6 of them (I think) and I only used 1. Maybe I will never need the others :-) Good luck (I didn't like the feel of the wax, although I resort to it when I have to which hasn't been very often thankfully!)

There are times when I come on this site, as a Brit, and think "wooooah what on earth is that??!!"

I just had to google 'canker sores' to check it wasn't some weird mouth infection that had passed me by. Turns out canker sores are in fact mouth ulcers and I am riddled with them!

I've one at the back the size of my finger nail. I've used 'bonjela' (it's a gel which stings like a b**ch but seems to do the trick) coupled with 'cordosyl' mouthwash. Neither are massively effective, but I am now working on sheer grit and painkillers to fight the pain. I've got a 2mm bit of wire poking out the back molar and keep repeating to myself "the bigger the ulcer, the longer the wire, the smaller the gap, the sooner the op!"

Stateside (and in fact everywhere but little old Blighty) seem to have so many products for brace wearers. You are lucky if you can find Christmas tree brushes here.

2mm is right on the border for getting it clipped; you may want to consider it. If you are closing gaps, that's only going to get longer.
