Hi, I have a 10mm over jet and I have been wearing lingual braces for 9 months. My orthodontist said the only way he can reduce the over jet is by doing interproximal reduction (sometimes called stripping)a procedure were they strip enamel from the teeth to make more space. I'm having doubts about getting this done because I don't know how much of an improvement it can make it my case, I'm not sure it will reduce my over jet enough to be worth doing. Also I think my smile looks fairly narrow now and I'm concerned that it could make this worse. Does anybody have experience with ipr? If so what were the results? Thanks

You are definitely right to have doubts that stripping the teeth will make much of a difference. 10 mm overjet is significant. Many orthodontists will try to offer less than ideal solutions. Stripping healthy teeth is not the right thing to do. It sounds like you have a skeletal problem. If I were you I would consult with an oral surgeon. I don't think oral surgeons jump into surgery the way orthodontists seem to want to fix everything with extractions, stripping, elastics... Also, lingual braces are not good to correct overjets. Are you wearing elastics?

Have you considered surgery?

I "only" had a 6mm overjet if I recall correctly, and my orthodontist only recommended surgery.

IPR works for a little bit of crowding, but I too have my doubts about it fixing a 10mm overjet.

I dont see how that would help your overjet. Have you went to other ortho's for consultations?
