Having a metal wire with clear braces?

#1 Post by ajs604 »

Hi everyone.

Just had a quick question. I paid for clear braces but the orthdontsit mentioned at my last adjustment I will need to have a metal wire (currently have a clear wire) at the next adjustment as there are no more metal wires in the size that I need to progress. I feel cheated as I paid for clear braces. I rang the ortho office this morning and they advised that no companies stock the wires in the size I need. I totally believe them, but still I feel cheated lol.

Anyone else had this experience?

I have the clear ceramic brackets but have never had a clear wire. I'm sorry you feel cheated. A metal wire won't look bad and if it helps get those teeth moving as they should, embrace it ;) :)

I have ceramic on top and have never had a clear wire. It's not that noticeable. Really.

I get being disappointed but it'll be fine. Think about your end result...

Well technically your braces are still clear, you will just have a metal wire

But in all seriousness, I have clear braces with a metal wire and it's still not that noticeable. Most people don't even get a clear/white wire, so you've already gotten more invisibility than the rest of us. It just means it's time for stronger wires, which means more movement and straighter teeth. Embrace it. :D

Hi ajs. I know what you mean, but I agree with Chichi.

My first three wires were white coated and a little more discreet than the subsequent silver- coloured wires. But I made such good progress in the first few days of my first silver wire that I was very happy to have it.The difference in my teeth more than made up for the loss of the white wire..

Good luck

Your ortho isn't being a cheapskate or lying to you. I imagine it would be impossible for the white wire coating to stick to the rectangular wires used for later phases of treatment; it'd chip off the edges in no time.

(currently have a clear wire)

Do you mean the wire you had was not metal and was "see-through," not just white coated?

Hey guys, thanks for your reply. I see now that it is very common and that I have been lucky to have the clear wire this long. Like you all say I just need to embrace it and realise that it wont be any different in terms of 'noticeability'.Thanks!

I'm sure they're working on wires that are transparent with similar properties to those in use now. When that is accomplished some person or corporation will make tons of money and there will be millions of happy ortho patients.
