I have a Class II Division, increased overbite - increased overjet of 12mm. I've been wearing my metal braces now for 4 months and getting elastics on next month.
My ortho said my problem wasn't my teeth it was the size and position of my jaw and said the braces would be used to align and coordinate the arches after which a mandibular advancement osteotomy would be required (jaw surgery).
I'm getting elastics on now next month and I'm hoping they help the overbit/jet. I got a wisdom tooth removed a month ago and the thought of surgery is really worrying/scaring me My ortho said I will need surgery and he's surgery as my treatment plan in the NHS - but now I'm really worried about it but haven't told him yet!
I had the same issue (11mm overjet + overbite due to underdeveloped jaw) but I had the surgery 5 months ago (also on the NHS). There are definitely some people that have had some success with elastics. I think they generally leave you with some overjet but it seems that quite a few people have had it reduced to around 5mm so I guess it depends on what you would be happy with results-wise. It might be worth speaking to your ortho about your worries and the options that are available to you. What did your original treatment plan say? Have you had an appointment with the surgeon yet? If not, then it might be worth asking who your surgeon would be and see if you can get an appointment set up to discuss the surgery.
The surgery is scary but I think it was worth it. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
Elastics help some patients and not others. It really all depends on what your jaw can support; your teeth are only so long, and your jawbone only so thick. Teeth can only be drawn forwards or backwards (or tilted) a certain amount before they just run out of room...
My treatment plan is braces, surgery then braces after. Yes I've saw the surgeon and he says I've a jaw discrepancy and need lower jaw surgery too bring it forward.
I was just hoping if I see some improvement after elastics I might just forget about the surgery. However, I know for a perfect result I would need surgery but it just scares me now!
Maybe you can just see how the treatment with elastics go/ whether you see good improvement and then decide about the surgery? Maybe you are already happy with the results with braces and elastics only, you never now....
I wish you very good luck with your treatment!
Every case is different, but I have a similar overbite (11mm or so) and I absolutely refuse to do jaw surgery. I hunted for a while to find an orthodontist who could treat me without surgery and without pulling any teeth... I have very narrow arches and several impacted teeth on the bottom, but would rather not have any treatment than be cut open and yanked to pieces. I found a highly-recommended functional orthodontist who is giving me exactly what I want - so far so good. I feel my arches expand every day... because the hooks cut into my cheeks more and more every day
Anyway I'm told that I will have elastics and a twin-block device for the overjet. I would 100x prefer something screwed into my mouth (Forsus?) than have that giant chunk of plastic in my mouth... no way would I be consistent about using it. Still, it beats surgery (in my opinion).
Anarchy45 are you based in the UK or the US? I am looking for someone in S Wales who is prepared to use functional orthodontic on an adult but 2 orthodontists and 1 consultant orthodontist in the hospital down and I'm getting nowhere!
