Problems with Invisalign
First I just want to say thanks for the boards. Some of the messages about Invisalign have been very helpful to me. I started my first tray two days ago. By the early evening, my throat was very sore and I had trouble swallowing. I thought it was just soreness in my back teeth that was radiating downward. I kept them in but hardly ate all day due to the soreness.
The next morning when I got up my mouth was really swollen. I looked like I had had injectables put in my lips! I also still had the sore throat plus a headache and a cough. I suffered through most of the day at work while reading the messages on this board. I called my dentist and told him about some of the feedback on the side effects. He was unaware of the FDA letter, so I emailed it to him. He told me to take out the Invisalign for two days and see if the sore throat went away. If so, he said he will order replacements for me without a certain chemical that causes reactions in some people.
This morning I feel about 50% better than yesterday, but I still have a sore throat and a headache. Do side effects like this linger even after you have removed the device? I guess it could be a total coincidence and I am just getting a cold or something, but that wouldn't explain the swelling in my mouth and lower face yesterday. It also wouldn't explain why I'm a lot better today than I was yesterday.
What scared me about this whole thing is I was given no information about possible side effects. I guess I should've done some research on my own, but given how well known this brand is I assumed I would be fine. My dentist did not say anything to me about side effects, and that just seems wrong to me. I wonder if they have even researched the product? It concerned me that he didn't know about the FDA article, but he did acknowledge that some patients have had reactions to them and he has to send them back.
Anyway, I hope it will work out for me because I really want to straigthen my teeth. I wore traditional braces when I was in my late teens (and a dreaded headgear) for three years, but my teeth have moved as I've aged. My bottom teeth are crowded and crooked and are pushing up against my upper teeth. I would really like to get it fixed but I can't stomach the thought of wearing regular or even ceramic braces. The last experience was very stressful for me. I still have dreams about it and the headgear.

Re: Problems with Invisalign
Poor you, that reaction must have been scary as hell. I must admit I'm allergic to nickel so one of my fears is an allergic reaction. Look, it sounds to me you need to have a talk with your ortho about what happens now. Explain your fears regarding what you went through when you were younger. I'm sorry I cant offer any other advice as I no nothing about your type of brace. Good luck and hope to hear from you soon
Re: Problems with Invisalign
Yeah, something doesn't sound right if your face is swelling.
It sounds like they can make them without the thing that might be causing the problem but if not, I wouldn't rule out braces entirely. They've come a long way in the last few years and my ortho doesn't use headgear at all so it's likely you wouldn't need to be using headgear again. I'm sorry your first experience was so traumatic

Re: Problems with Invisalign
Wow, that sound awful. I had no idea Invisalign could cause such problems but did a search after reading your post. This should be stated from the start! I hope you are feeling much better by now.

Hi Guys,
Wish i had read this post a few days ago! I live in Australia and i've just paid the deposit to start a 13month invisalign treatment. They never mentioned this FDA issue to me. I guess if i get any swelling i will know exactly what it is... Regardless i'm really excited about starting. I should get my first set of aligners in 2 weeks. :)

Re: Problems with Invisalign
Thanks for the positive 'good lucks' guys!... so i have had invisalign for nearly 6 weeks now. The first few days of each new aligner change (every 2 weeks) are sore on particular teeth where there is pressure but it soon fades. But i would love to know if other people find that after the first few days the aligners don't seem particularly tight - at least enough to be 'moving your teeth'
My friend from interstate is doing invisalign and her dentist gave her "chew toys" which are basically small rubber tubes to bite on during the day to keep her aligners in place. Did anyone else get these!? cos i think it would make a world of difference.

Re: Problems with Invisalign
The aligners move the teeth for the first few days and the roots for the rest, from my understanding. Patients are encouraged not to switch aligners too quickly so that there won't be any risk for the roots but I know some people do 10 days instead of 14 and don't have troubles.
Good luck!
Good luck!
Re: Problems with Invisalign
In this sense, invisilign works in a similar fashion to traditional braces... most of the movement (and pain) happens with a few days of the adjustment (usually an archwire change and/or re-ligating), and you are waiting for the supporting bone and gums to "catch up" before jolting things again.polpol wrote:Thanks for the positive 'good lucks' guys!... so i have had invisalign for nearly 6 weeks now.
