Making progress...starting on elastics. Pics included.

#1 Post by badbites »

Just did my latest wire change and my upper arch is finally expanded enough to start the long, tedious road that is elastics. My bottom still needs a fair bit of time to upright the teeth (as it was started much later). The front pic only shows half of the elastics...there is another triangle on each side toward the anterior side, so four elastics total.

Slow progress to be sure...but at least it's a step in the right direction...

Hello Badbites.

That looks like a good rate of expansion on your upper arch; hopefully the lower will follow suit. How long will you need to keep your expanders? They must be a lot to contend with on top of fixed braces and elastics. How has your speech been with all these appliances?

Good luck with your treatment

Jem
Sectional brace with Damon clear brackets fitted to front 6 upper teeth 3 January 2012
Brackets added to premolars 2 April 2012
Estimated treatment time originally 6-9 months
. Brace removed on 22 July 2013 after 18 months and 19 days
Now enjoying bonded upper retainer plus part time essix/hawley( I have both)

Hello Jem,

The expanders will both remain in and fixed until the bottom expansion/uprighting has been completed. After that, I was told there is a period of four months "stabilization time" before they can become removable. Even when they become removable, they'll both need to remain in 24/7 for the duration of my treatment (except when eating and brushing) to maintain the expansion and prevent relapse. I'm hoping to have them removable by the end of 2013. I was warned that the elastics are going to be very slow going as the roots of my teeth are very deep, and my open bite is considerable.

So I'll be wearing this stuff for a few years yet...:(

My speech has been decent but the lisp is noticable, and now a bit more so with the elastics. Hopefully, it improves as I get used to these elastics...
