Getting sick with braces and elastics

#1 Post by TMJJill »

So yesterday, I got violently sick. It was the first time I've had to deal with vomiting since I got my braces on. Despite tons of brushing and mouth wash, I still feel like my braces are "dirty". Especially with my power chain. I know I shouldn't have, but I skipped wearing my nighttime elastics all together last night because I didn't want to face dealing with the mess while wearing them.

Anyone out there with any advice?

Something my ortho told me is to put a mixture of baking soda and salt in your waterpik and wash out with that--it really does make my teeth feel cleaner.

Get well soon!

Ick. Poor thing *hugs*. I know exactly how you feel as I just threw up for the first time since getting my braces too. It's weird, I just came on here to look for advice and here was your thread on the first page.

I'd like to try the baking soda and salt in the waterpik. What is the correct ratio for it? I don't want to put too much in.

I hope you feel better soon.

I wasn't sure if the post was TMI, but I figured someone out there could relate.

Sorry to hear you aren't feeling well either. I rarely get ill like that and this time it hit hard and fast. Never fun to go through. :yuck:

I'd forgotten that Klobird had posted about the baking soda and salt a while ago. She didn't have specific amounts. I just put what seems right. I start small, then add in more until it seems right. Not scientific at all on my part. A nice easy solution though.

Hope you are feeling better too.

I guess it really is that time of year.

I'm feeling much better from that. :D I used the baking soda and salt in my waterpik. Not sure how much it really did, but it made me think my teeth are cleaner. I worried about things I couldn't see lurking behind a powerchain.

I'm still dealing with a cough that I've had for 9 weeks now. Not loving that. Working with several docs to get it back under control. On some pretty strong Antibiotics, inhalers, meds, etc... for that.

Ebony and Sita, I hope you are doing better now as well. :rose: Getting sick like that is never fun.

Get well soon everyone.

Just a question won't the salt and/or baking soda mess up/clog the water tubes on the Waterpik or similar oral irrigator, as I thought they were only meant to take just water?

Baking soda is great for your mouth because it neutralizes acidity where bad bacteria flourish. I use baking soda in my Waterpik, and an amazing mouthwash and tooth powder called Ozospa, which has a baking soda property as well as xylitol, ozonated water, organic menthol and other natural products. The combination works better than anything I've ever tried in my life. My mouth tastes clean and fresh. Unfortunately the product is only available in New Zealand right now.

I couldn't find any baking soda so I just used salt. Made my mouth feel better. In all honesty I doubt it was needed. I had cleaned my mouth so well I doubt there was anything left to worry about, but it certainly did put my mind at ease.

I just had a stomach bug and am better now. I hope that everyone else is doing better as well.
