Is it possible to fix an at least 10mm overjet and huge overbite without surgery?

I'm not a dentist nor am I into dentistry, but I swear I have this classmate who has the WORST overjet i've ever seen. She just got braces half a year ago and her teeth are now SO MUCH BETTER.
Just do it I would say!

Thanks for your reply, that's so great! I've had braces for a couple of months now so hopefully they will sort out my problems.
My overjet/overbite are pretty bad, but after watching youtube there is no way im going through jaw surgery.. OUCH!!

I started with a 10mm overjet also. The ortho said I would have a slight underbite by the time I was finished, and it's getting closer and closer. I have not had surgery, but I do have the Forsus appliance, which is like discreet headgear. (Inside the mouth--no one can see it)
There were a LOT of problems with the appliance at first, but now that the bugs have been worked out, I am having tremendous success. And it has taken a while to get used to the appliance, but now it's fine.

I started day one in elastics, and had them until the Forsus, and probably will after the 6 months in the Forsus.

Let's see--10mm overjet or 2yrs in braces etc to save my teeth as I get older....I wouldn't change a thing. (Well, I wish that I wouldn't have had all the problems at first with the Forsus--I wonder how much "working" time was wasted with all that...)

So, yes, I have had success without surgery. Good luck to you!!

I had an 8mm overjet and I've read a few past stories on here of people having a 10mm overjet without needing surgery.
So it is very possible to achieve this without surgery but depends on each individual case I guess.

Good luck with it all and I'm sure you'll have a beautiful smile when it's all over

Mine was 12mm and now, for once in my life, I can claim that I've had an underbite because my braces work so well! (Rubber bands are used to pull my top teeth back and after every adjustment I have to reverse directions because they overcorrect my bite. I've gone back and forth between overjet and underbite for the past 5 months or so). This is done without surgery but with extractions.

I had 10 mm overbite, surgery was recommended but I refused and now I have no overbite. I think the results maybe could have been better but to me not worth it. I am happy with what he has accomplished. They also said I needed forsus springs but elastics were all that were needed :-)

Thanks for the replies everyone, great to be receiving so much positive info :)

I received a reply on one of my other posts saying that I wont be able to use elastics to correct my bite because I have upper linguals/traditional lowers and would have to switch to traditionals top and bottom. Is this correct?

Hello
I am starting my journey next week ! I have a 9mm overbite and without having surgery my dentist said she could get it down to about 4 with elastics ! I am happy with that as at 48 i dont feel I want to do the surgery

This is all really positive for me, i have a 7mm overjet and don't want surgery.

Did all of you who just had elastics also have extractions? My orthodontist (and the hospital when i discussed surgery) did not want to do any further extractions as I has my 5s top and bottom out with my first round of braces as a child.

I wish I knew the extent of my overjet but I have an elastic, no surgery, no extractions, and supposed to get a TAD. So I have somehow dodged all that to correct a fairly mild overjet and a fairly deep overbite, as well as crowding and misalignment.

Temporary Anchorage Device. They put a screw directly into your jaw and attach pulleys and widgets or something to it. Yeah, I'm thrilled.

Ouch! I'm sure it won't be as bad as it sounds though and just think of when you're all done :)

I think I need a good long chat with my orthodontist as to just straighten things up a bit seems like a waste of time as whilst it will look marginally better i think i'll still be really concious of the overjet. Especially when I'm hearing so many stories of people improving theirs without surgery. Although knowing my luck i'll have something that makes me an exception to the rule!! Stupid teeth!!!
