Impressions...

#1 Post by pasr16 »

Hey everyone, I went to my orthodontist's office three weeks ago and on that appt he told the tech to schedule me for impressions. unfortunately, he doesn't really talk to me(or any of his pts). So my question is, will they take my braces off for impressions? The tech said "your braces come off shortly after" but this was to ambigious for me. Can they take impressions with braces on??

Some docs do take impressions with the braces still on, some take them off for the impressions. If the braces are left on for the impressions, the lab will carve them off prior to making your retainer.

I was actually wondering about that myself because I read that teeth shift post-braces without a retainer. I was afraid that in the time that I am not braced and don't yet have my retainer my teeth will move and the retainer won't even fit right when get it. :?

@Countess: they do shift post braces without a retainer, which is why you must wear a retainer as specified by your doctor. But, depending on how your doc finishes your case, you have time in between. Some docs allow their patients to go up to two to three weeks with nothing, then when they snap in the retainer, any minor movement is fixed. Some doctors insist on inserting the retainers as soon as the braces are taken off, which is why the impressions are taken with the braces still on. Moral of the story: wear your retainers! :D
