What was your first meal after Debonding day?

Hi All,

After just under a year of treatment, I cannot believe it, but my de-brace day has been set for exactly 6 days from today (10/5). I am beyond excited and have been literally crossing off the days on the calendar.

My question to all of you is, what was your first meal right after getting debonded? I have been eagerly awaiting the day by envisioning meals of corn on the cob, starbursts, brisket, followed by a frenzy of biting into apples similar to this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OAsZDf-HVo

Thanks guys for all the support over the last year!

Cheers,

Andy

No question in my mind. One whole large bucket of movie popcorn. That is the first thing I'm eating when I get these babies off.
I can hardly wait.

I had no idea people were so crazy about popcorn! I rarely eat it. When my braces come off, I'll be switching back over from the extra thin tortilla chips to the extra thick ones. I couldn't care less about apples and popcorn!

What's the matter with brisket? I eat whole steaks.

I love fresh fruit: pears, apples, peaches. It bugs me no end that I have to cut them up into small pieces to be able to eat them. I used to enjoy just taking the fruit from the refrigerator and biting into it. That extra step means really limits when I can eat fruit.

Same with ribs- can't bite on them, have to use knife and fork.

Just curious about the thick vs thin tortilla chips- is it a matter of ease of biting?

No, the thin ones will easily crumble and shatter into small, brittle fragments, while the big thick ones break up into thicker "shards" that could either pry a bracket off via lifting the wire, or becoming lodged on a bracket in a way that transmits the force of chewing directly onto the bracket and putting more shearing stress on the bond than it can handle.

The thick chips I like are really thick and crunchy! Very few broken chips in the bag. But as for the thin ones, they taste good, but they're so brittle that sometimes just lifting some salsa out of the bowl will break the chip in half.

I fried up some chicken strips tonight, and even some of the batter clumps got so crunchy that I felt like I had to be pretty careful chewing. The problem is that I've had six broken brackets in two months, none of which were my fault - all of them due to the apparent fact that my teeth are especially smooth and the bonding material doesn't adhere to them very well. So when they pop off, they use the stronger etching solution and I haven't had any of them come off twice... but I'm still afraid that there still might be a few that might just be waiting for the right opportunity to jump off my teeth. My system of gauging what will and won't pop a bracket is all thrown out of whack because of this, so I try to gradually work up. Maybe I'm being too conservative, but I know how strong those thick tortilla chips can be when you're applying force through it laterally versus just breaking it. Way more risky than popcorn.

I've eaten pretty much everything with the exception of sunflower seeds. I want to be able to crack sunflower seeds with my teeth and it won't work with braces haha.

I have a "check for removal" appointment on Oct 24th! October 6th will make 3 years - 1 year longer than my sentence :(

I've eaten plenty of steak with braces. It's doable for me, even with my smooth teeth and brackets that love to pop! Go ahead, you should be fine!

I haven't popped any brackets or wires yet! I eat almonds, peanuts all the time and even tried a Snickers bar last week. My first Snickers in a year!

I know that this question has been posted on here a hundred times, but to me, i never get sick of daydreaming of the post-braces foods. my SUPPOSED deband date is in 3 weeks, but I wont let myself believe it's true until the little rascals are getting pried from my teeth. now, for the foodlust:

I'm going to have the gooey-est nut covered caramel apple with a side of corn on the cob. Then probably a sandwich with chewy bread.

I also haven't had to limit myself THAT much during braces, it's more about what I am willing to deal with eating rather than can/can't. I CAN eat sandwiches, it's just so uncomfortable. I'm excited to snack on crispy raw veggies and nuts again freely.
