Moving teeth UP?

#1 Post by hypocrite opportunist »

I am at the 8-month mark, and at my last appointment, after doing my "progress report" photos, my ortho decided to reposition four brackets. The brackets on my upper, front two teeth were originally placed very close to my gum line, and she removed those and replaced them at the center of each tooth in order to "move those teeth up." I have heard of bringing teeth down out of the gums, but I didn't know you could move them up. Anyone know how this works? I'm just curious what to expect. I've got quite a bend in my wire now because it has to swoop down low on those two teeth and then back up on the rest of the upper arch. Thanks!

From what I have been told you can definitely intrude your teeth (extrude is pulling it out) into the gums. My ortho is trying to accomplish this with a couple of my teeth with some kinks. Sounds like she might be repositioning some brackets for me soon too.

Absolutely the teeth can be "moved up" or intruded. This involves pushing the teeth into the bone, generally to open the bite for anterior teeth, or to close the bite for posterior teeth.

Repositioning brackets is my personal preference over bends in the wire, since if a bracket comes off, the entire wire with the bends can be rendered "useless", amongst other reasons. Still, both work :).

Good to know. I had some repositioning on my bottom teeth to push one tooth down into my gums. I have a bad feeling that it will take a lot longer than trying to pull a tooth away from the gums.

Thanks everyone. I know she is still in the process of correcting my deep bite, so I presume the repositioning has something to do with that.
