whitening

#1 Post by corkboy »

I had 6 months braces and when they came off I used the whitening trays with gel. My teeth did whiten a lot but they are yellow close to the gum line. I asked my dentist about this and he said this is the roots showing and they will not whiten. Surely there is a way to whiten all the teeth that you can see and not have to put up with yellow at the gum line. Any solutions?

Your Dentist certainly knows more than do I and I have been using an over the counter whitening gel almost every day for months while I have braces. I think my teeth have whitened to somewhat include the molars at the gum, however they don't whiten at any where near the same rate and remain somewhat colored. He is probably right , but repeated use appears to have some results.

I have never been a product pusher, but I gotta tell you about a toothpaste I found. I am a previous smoker who has been braces for about 7 months. I drink 4+ cups of coffee a day...sometimes tea instead....but needless to say, staining has been a problem. I have non-lig ceramic uppers, and metal lowers.

This toothpaste I found is called SuperSmile. I have purchased 2 bottles now...and trust me, I would NEVER spend $18 on toothpaste unless it worked, I am a $3 Colgate kinda gal. But it worked, wonders!. It is a cosmetic whitening toothpaste, safe to use every day and is specifically made for" caps, crowns, bonding, and BRACES!" Just Google Super Smile and you will see it, I purchased it from Amazon although they do sell them through their website too I think.

I used it skeptically the first time thinking I had just wasted $20 on freakin' toothpaste...but it was damn good. I use the white strips and whatnot with my braces too, but this toothpaste changed the game.

No more gross stains on my ceramics even! I dont have ligs...so no clue how it would work with those.

I just re-read my post and it sounds pretty....cheesy, lol but I am serious, it was worth every penny...and if there are people out there with braces who smoke or drink coffee/tea, this is THE BEST stuff out there. Combine the toothpaste with the Glide Scope Whitening floss, and booya!

I was told not to use whitening toothpaste with braces on as it would leave spots on my teeth that aren't as white where the brackets were when the braces come off...is this not true? I've had some staining, mostly on the uppers, and I think it's more noticeable since my brackets are clear on the "social 6". I was thinking baking soda might be a safe method. Any thoughts on this?

KreyFL,

I just went to order some of that SuperSmile. It looked valid and was reasonably priced (I don't have braces yet and wanted to whiten before my invisalign). Then I went to order and the shipping price alone was $68!!! I live in Canada, not Belarus! I order my Bonne Bell lipstick from the states all the time and only pay a few extra bucks for shipping. How much do Americans pay for shipping from this company? I think this is a little sketchy, to be honest.

You can get it on ebay for under $20 including shipping to Canada for the 4.2oz.

I am very skeptical though, I can't see it being any better than the more mainstream whitening pastes.

I have gone back to my regular dentist(she did not do the 6 month braces)for a checkup and I asked her about the yellowing at the gum line. She said the same as the 6 month braces dentist, that the teeth are denser near the root and more difficult if not impossible to whiten. She also said that my gums had receded and therefore more of the root and dentine was showing and will not whiten. She also said that I am seeing the yellow when I look in the mirror and nobody else will see my teeth that close up and therefore will not see the yellow. I think its that after my braces were removed I just started paying more attention to my teeth. But I think she's right, and its only me who notices!!! In any case my teeth did whiten a huge amount after using 22% gel in the trays.

Hey yall,

For the ones who are still skeptical....they have a smaller one they sell that is cheaper...its like $8 instead of $20 if you want to try it out.

I have a 7 Months Progress Pics posted on the main page that has pics of my braces and brackets (REALLY UP CLOSE) and you can see how white they are. I STILL OCCASIONALLY SMOKE AND I DRINK 4+ CUPS OF COFFEE EVERY DAY. HAVE NOT HAD A CLEANING SINCE Oct, getting one on June 2nd. I think the whiteness kinda speaks for itself.

In terms of whitening your teeth while having braces...well I think this is up for debate. I plan on getting a good cleaning and mild whitening treatment after my braces come off so I am not too concerned about "minor" two tone issues or whatever. But, the SuperSmile whitening is so low key and gradual. It really just removes daily surface stains like Tobacco, wine, coffee, etc etc. (really helps with the in between staining) It isnt really going to whiten your teeth as much as Crest White Strips or whatever. Maybe if you used it for like 6 months it would.

In regards to how it compares....well I have used lots: Crest, Colgate, Rembrandt, etc etc etc....and none of them work like this one. But, SuperSmile says you have to use a DRY BRUSH approach. Following the directions is important. I use the SuperSmile at night, and good ol normal foamy toothpaste in the morning. Although, I should use the SuperSmile twice a day.

lilone: Yeah, check a couple of the sellers on Amazon and Ebay....there are several places that sell it. The store at Amazon I have used is Wilshire Beauty.

Hope this helps!
