I'm also from Sweden and would like to get in contact with someone who has completed (or almost completed) an ALF treatment after having four teeth extracted in childhood/adolescence. The two dentists I've had recommended to me are Geir Olsen in Norway and Hugh McDermott in Ireland. Has anyone here had good results with any of them?
LMS, hello! Whom of them did you chose?
I'm curious because I have severe TMD and looking for really nice specialist and also heard about dr Geir Olsen. Are you already in process of treatment?
Has anyone used the Alf appliance for an open bite?
I have an open bite. My Dentist said that Myofunctional Therapy would help close down an open bite. However I have an ALF b/c I have TMJ and my teeth are out of alignment due to many years of tongue thrusting and poor tongue posture. Not sure of your problem but MYO would def help. I am 9 weeks into a 20 week session. You do certain exercises 2-3X a day and the force of your tongue in the proper posture will help close down that bite. Many MYO Therapists will do the therapy with you via FaceTime. It's not a cheap and fast fix - takes about a good year of persistent and faithful work - to close down the bite.

Yes, Fibopix. My tongue stays at the roof of my mouth - I have proper tongue posture now despite my small pallate. I have more of a natural lip seal and I breathe out of my nose now. My MYO therapist and I noticed that my open bite has closed down a tiny bit. I feel like it's not as obvious. You can feel the changes more than you see them. You HAVE to be consistent with the exercises for this to work.

I'm thinking of having the ALF treatment to straighten my teeth - basically the two top lateral incisors are coming forward and the central incisors are being pushed back. My mouth is very narrow it seems so they would try and stretch the arch, top and bottom, to create space, which would take around 6 months, and then I'd need to wear a brace for 9months. I don't mind this as all the other orthos say I need 4 teeth out (two top and two bottom), but I really don't want to do this. I wonder if anyone has any experience of this working before and did they encounter any problems?
thanks in advance.

Hello,
I just got fitted with my appliance today. I will keep you posted. I'm being treated for TMJ and cervical dystonia. I have had dystonia for 6 years. I went into remission for about 2 years but was never 100%. My naturopath happen's to be in the same office where Dr. Darrick Nordstrom sees patients occasionally. She told him about my case and he came in to talk to me in between his patients. He is an extremely kind, humble man. He made some recommendations which led me on the treatment path I am currently on. I am seeing a specialist who was mentored by Dr. Nordstrom. The specialist who fitted me with the ALF believes the dystonia is related to my jaw being out of alignment. I also have bruxism.
Will post again after a few weeks.

Hi. I just got an aLF put in yesterday, and it didn't get adjusted yet... the DDS just wanted me to get used to it in my mouth. Everything went great: no pain, etc, which is a first for me as far as appliances go. I got an upper and lower with a little plastic nob that doesn't permit my teeth to come together fully. The appliance is bonded to my teeth.

My two questions are: One, has anyone else had this spacer between the teeth, and if so, how does one chew food thoroughly? And, two: I had a little mishap with some gelatin capsules getting stuck in the appliance (yes I am eating supplements bc I can't yet eat much food!) and it tugged a little on the ALF as it was congealing. I was able to dissolve it eventually without damaging the appliance, but now I have an ache in my head. Did I just "adjust " it irrevocably? The thing is so pliable... My DDSax is on vacation for two months, so... um.. help?

Also, he glued some pieces to my teeth. I had just brushed, but I'm concerned about caries . Shouldn't he have cleaned the area thoroughly first? Feeling nervous about these two months, wanting reassurance.

Hi, I just got an ALF in last week. I had really bad sleep apnea very debilitating, and even had the major double jaw surgery. I haven’t seen huge improvements especially in mental health, so after visiting a well regarded cranial osteopath she suggested an ALF as I was a candidate.

I’d love to hear updates from people on this thread! I had headgear and braces as a kid, now I’m a large framed 37 year old man. Dentist said my arch was way too narrow for my size (also did orofscial myology tongue therapy as I was tongue tied and was never placing my tongue in proper place until 2 years ago).

Have people who have had ALF device for mental health and other physiological conditions seen substantial and meaningful changes? Specifically on sleep, mood, concentration, stress tolerance, weight loss.

Sort of at the end of my rope. 12years of psych meds, then recent apnea treatments, feel a lot better than the worst of it when I was non functional, but quality of life and mental health still struggle!!

It’s been 4days so far, adjusting to speech issues and trying to find proper placement of tongue now that the wire is in, no pain, very slight ache few hours after install that has gone away, suspect it needs to be opened up a bit more!

I know a dentist that does ALF in the UK in the Midlands area. I went to see him and he did a treatment plan for me. I didn't go through with it though. If anyone wants the contact details then contact me and I will happily send them to you. I would normally just put his name here but apparently I did something wrong recently by mentioning an orthos name (son of Jon-Mike M)in a thread I started where I was asking for if people have had any treatment/experiences with him and the name auto flagged spam?!! I only joined this forum a couple of days ago so I don't get what I did wrong in mentioning an orthos name. Other people have according to the search results! I couldn't even edit my post either to remove the name. Next thing I know the admins deleted profile and thread. Completely over the top and uncalled for.

I'm an adult in the U.S. and received my upper ALF appliance a week ago. I'm told I'll get the lower appliance in a few months, for some reason they need to go slow with me, not sure why but my arch is very narrow. The first time they put in the upper ALF they did not adjust it so that I could get used to it. Then in 5 days I went in for my 1st adjustment which was minor. I'm told that later on the adjustments will be more aggressive. I do lisp a little and I'm told to keep the tip of my tongue behind the wire loop. My normal tongue position is the tip rests on my front teeth, so pulling it back a bit feels weird. Eating is weird because I feel like I'm eating a wire as well (the wire that is in the front), but I don't have trouble with the foods I'm eating. My ALF is removable, but I plan to keep it in all the time except for brushing teeth. I'm hoping for my breathing to improve, I'm a mouth breather most of the time. I've had several surgeries to correct my deviated septum and they didn't work, I feel like the ALF is my last hope. I'm also wondering if my narrow face will widen as part of this, especially in the eye area. Has anyone that is further along seen visible widening in their face?
Hey !

I am living in Sweden in a small town. I visited an orto with my daughter a couple of month ago.
She is suffering of sever crowded teeth in her upper jaw. He said that he had to extract four teeth.
That is what orto do here in Sweden. And then he said that her jawline would reduce.

At home I started to look on the internet and I read about terrible things that can happend .
So I decided to look för a Alf dentist . I found out that their is no one here in Sweden. But I found one in Norway . We have just been visiting him and it will cost us a lot of money.( All dentist care is for free in Sweden for children up to 20 years.)

Anyway I don`t regret it . I am absolutely sure of that this will be the best for her. He didn´t just look on her teeth , also her jaw . Her jaw is cracking and it turns to the left when she is closing her mouth.
And he said that Alf will make this good to. He seemed to be very devoted

And I just told my ordinary dentist about this and he didn´t belive in Alf at all. But I wasn´t expecting anythingelse.

I`m just sorry about that I didn´t know about Alf several years ago.
I do wonder about one thing though, does she need a retainer the rest of her life ? And one more thing
will her face be much wider?

And I don´t understand why it isn´t common with Alf in Sweden . I have phoned a lot of dentist here and they seem to belive that I`m crazy . And said that I shall not belive everything that I read on the internet.

Hej!

Hej Anna,

Did everything work out for you? I also live in Sweden and am considering the getting the ALF. It would mean so much to me if you could tell me if you got the treament and from what dentist. I am thinking about contacting Erik Barman in Norway. If you got the ALF, was he the dentist who helped you? If you want, you can contact me on facebook (Tammie Mörgelin) or email (t.morgelin@hotymail.com) Tack på förhand!
Hi Linn!
I also live in Sweden and am looking for a place where i could do the AFL treatment. Do you recommend the one you went to? How much did it cost at the end and did your daughter need braces after the AFL? I am 25 years old so it might be more expensive for me. How many times did you have to go there?

I will appreciate any help you can give me!

/Anna
