Hi all, I was just wondering if anyone has got a (lower especially) wisdom out while they had braces in? I've had an impacted lower right wisdom tooth for a while now, had it infected multiple times but am such a wimp that the thought of the pain after it was took out has put me off. Now though I know that I really should get it out before I get a serious infection as the last one wasn't pretty
Is it extra bother to get it out with the braces in or can the surgeon just work round them? I know they aren't attached to the wisdom tooth but would it still be tricky? Also does it take ages to heal? x
I had my wisdoms (3, all of them impacted) before braces, and it was not too bad. The surgery itself was easy--went there, they put me out, woke up and no more wisdoms! The recovery took a couple days, but the pain wasn't really all that bad. You have to be careful what you chew, but mostly you just feel swollen and bruised. Now, I have a pretty high tolerance for pain, but if I recall there was never any really sharp pain, it was more that I was tender and ate mashed potatos for a couple days. In some ways I feel like it was easier with impacted teeth because they sewed up the holes so I didn't have any giant craters!
Quite possibly the most unique screen name I've ever seen!
I had one tooth extracted (a premolar) while my braces were on, and there was no problem whatsoever. So, I don't think there would be a problem extracting your wisdom tooth with your braces already on.
evilnel is right about the process, though. I had all 4 of mine out with no pain whatsoever for 3 of them. For some reason, one of them decided to give me a bit of trouble, but once I got treated for the infection, everything was great.

Thank you, I've just heard back from the dentist and he wants to take out my wisdom tooth asap but hopefully like yours it won't give me too much trouble!

Thank you, it is true though I am crazy
I've had problems getting my upper wisdom teeth out it makes me slightly nervous about lowers, but I've heard 2 good stories about them so that makes me feel better
I had trouble getting one of my uppers taken out, too. In fact, he said there was a small sliver of tooth that was very far up, and very close to my sinus cavity. He decided to just extract most of the tooth and leave the little sliver in there, to prevent accidentally puncturing my sinuses. Good call! But I really think everything will be just fine. I'm a HUGE chicken when it comes to all things dental, especially extractions. I even got laughing gas so I could get my mind off what they were doing... and after about 15 seconds, he was done! Didn't even get my money's worth of the gas! LOL!

before the surgeon removes it - you will have an appointment for consultation where he will tell you what you should do about braces. Have your x-rays from your ortho send to him!!! will save you a little fortune and some additional radiation of your head.In general there are hundreds threads about removing wisdom teeth on this forum already - all about the same thing. So, you can read and read.
I have had 3 of my wisdom teeth removed already (about a year ago) and have one left, which is impacted. My Ortho told me this needs to be removed. He said it would be better to have it removed before my lower braces go on, but just said because their gloves tend to get caught on the metal in the mouth... no other issue.
I only have my top braces at the moment, and depending on when I get an appointment (I should be having the lower impacted wisdom tooth removed on the NHS) I might end up having it removed with my braces on, and don't think it will be a problem. I think if it had been, then the Ortho would have specifically requested I wait for the removal first.

I was meant to say, I might end up having it removed with my lower braces on.

Thanks for your replies guys and thanks loads RedDress for that tip! (Rang the ortho and he's sending the opg to the surgeon-definitely don't want anymore radiation! )
