grinding teeth at night with braces

#1 Post by believer1964 »

before i got braces i had to wear a mouthguard as i grind my teeth at night.

since i am finally able to touch a back tooth now, i wake up in the middle of the night grinding.

is there something can be done since im in braces to cushion the teeth if im grinding at night?

I cant wear my origional mouthguard as it wont go over my braces and it doesnt fit anymore anyway.

just concerned that grinding may mess up my progress or do something harmful.

I used the splintek original Sleeprite mouthgard. Bonus..the 'wings' protect your inner cheeks from bracket rub!
2/2/09: metal braces T/B
8/20/10: braced removed (18mons, 18days), hawley retainers T/B
9/16/10: LR central incisor extracted (failed root canal)
2/23/11: implant/bone graft
9/15/11: implant crown placed, lower lingual bonding corrected
9/21/11: upper bonding on lateral gaps from upper arch forward advancement
10/17/11: new hawley retainers w/plastic tubing over the 'social six' wire, both T/B

My dental assistant told me I can't wear a mouth guard,'cause it would slow down the tooth movement.I've already broke off a piece of my front tooth by clenching at night. I had more bonding added to my molars and this has helped alot.

I clench and grind my teeth all the time and I can't wear a mouthguard with braces. I worry I'm damaging my teeth, but I haven't really found a way to stop. On another thread, I think one of the orthos (drrick) said that it's involuntary, so it's hard to stop.
