Anybody hear of this device?

The homeoblock used for adult palatal expansion without surgery? The results it show are seemingly good. Is it just a type of expander, one of many that can be used for expansion, or is it unique is what I am wondering.

Hey tdawg, I'm hoping you're still around as this post is a little old now....

Ok, from what I understand having read through the site and the academic articles, this is a palatal expander with a unilateral (one side only) bite block.

It's worn at night time plus a few waking hours and is user adjusted with the key system common to palate expanders.

I can't say if it differs any more than that from 'traditional' palate expanders - the major difference seems to be the method of its application.

Clearly Dr Belfor has seen some great results in teeth straightening and facial (maxillary) development, and I'm in no way expert enough to criticise his science. His academic articles make great pains to specify the underlying mechanism by which these results occur: his theory is that the constant pressure causes epigenetic factors to kick in, developing the face to it's genetic potential; the theory being that modern lifestyle factors (principally food related) have caused a lack of optimal facial development, but that the potential development is not lost and can be re-triggered by his technique.

Now, from my lay position, this theory sounds totally plausible, but not testable and I do worry whether this mechanism is in line with current scientific understanding of epigenisis. I can't get access to the papers he cites in favour of this theory, but even if I could I probably couldn't understand them sufficiently to make a judgement.

That said, I do wonder if the theory is a purely post hoc explanation of results Dr. Belfor has seen. In other words, that once he started noticing the changes in facial structure, he decided that an explanatory theory was necessary for his published papers. In a sense, then, it wouldn't matter whether the explanation was correct or not, the results are clearly key.

On the other hand, I am very worried generally about Junk science and quackery - there's a hell of a lot of it about. I'm even more worried by the lack of information on the device from credible 3rd party sources. But it's true to say that real innovators do often plough lonely furrows, and I have no reason to doubt that Dr. Belfor is an excellent dentist.

Anyway, after that long preamble, I'll cut to the chase: I'm interested.

Sufficiently interested that I have just had dental models made and CT scans performed, all to be sent to him shortly for an initial assessment.

I shall be sure to let you know what happens!

I think this can be done naturally!

Hi guys :D

I'm achieving great results through expanding my palate naturally.

Have you heard of NeuroCranial Restructuring... it produces 'cracks' which release tension and help the sphenoid bone settle into its natural position.

I've found its possible to produce this 'crack' naturally, and the result is the widening of the palate, both upper and lower.

I'm not sure what board policy about putting contact details up here is, but am happy to teach people how to do this if you're interested (free of charge)

Since you said it's free, I'd love to read more about this. I want a wider palate but my ortho said it doesn't work so well on adults.

Made a YouTube Video...

Hey there...

I've made a video showing how I am expanding the palate naturally.... here's the link:

Dont take this the wrong way, but I dont think that is doing anything beneficial.

Well except that it's expanding the palate, which is the topic of this thread...

Whether you believe me that it's expanding the palate is another story.

Have you heard of Neurocranial Restructuring? It also uses the 'cracking' concept to produce palatal expansion.

Here's a video called "cracking skulls for health and beauty"

Just seems like it is something that could cause problems

Have you noticed any expansion of your pallet?

Yes, absolutely... and yes I agree that it does seem unnatural - it is very counter-intuitive.

I had 4 teeth extracted to make room for train tracks as a teenager, so my palate was significantly narrowed, and there is also a huge amount of tension all over my head.

So now I'm trying to re-expand my palate so that I have room for implants. There has been a definite widening but so far no opening of the gaps where the teeth were extracted.

do you notice your teeth moving out of alignment?

Do you have before/after pictures? You can actually see a difference to your face w/the palate expansion?

My teeth are ok, as I suspect that they are gradually being pushed back to their natural position.

As to how long this takes, that's anyone's guess. I had the force of the train tracks pulling my teeth gradually back for more than 2 years, which was of course constant tension (as you probably know).

So I imagine that I would have to do this exercise for a very long time to get rid of all the tension... I wouldn't be surprised if it was upwards of 30 years!

But I've no problem with that, mainly for the fact that it feels like I am reversing the aging process. Instead of getting tighter and more hunched over as I age, my posture is now straightening and muscle tension is being released.

Cheers

Yes I do have photos, I'll have to dig them out though... I'll see if I can figure out how to make a video that highlights the changes

Does anyone know if it is possible to expand the palate in one direction (unilateral expansion?) Is this wht Dr Belfor's treatment is capable of?
