Can a crossbite be fixed without surgery?

#1 Post by amandajane »

I have a crossbite on the left side , I have been told by 2 or so orthodontist that I would need surgery? I was hoping that rubberbands / elastics would fix the problem as it did in my first time with braces. This is my second time with braces.
What do you guys think?

I have 2 bicuspids in a pretty bad cross bite - when I would close my mouth those 2 teeth were completely behind my bottom teeth. I specifically asked my ortho about surgery (in regards to my deep bite though, not the cross bite) and he says that I do not need surgery at all. I just looked at your story again, is your cross bite towards the back of your mouth? I'm not sure if that would make a difference.

I'm getting my cross bite teeth brought into the arch via metal buttons that are sitting lingual, and he is tying elastic around the button and around the plastic tube-covered arch wire. A month in and they are slowly but surely coming into the arch. I go every 3 weeks and get those elastic ties changed and tightened. And the cross bite is also why I have to wear this lower clear retainer/tray - that doesn't allow me to bite all the way down, therefore, removing the road block of the my lower teeth so that the bicuspids can come forward.

I have had a crossbite since my pre-teen years and my original ortho didn't fix it. Now, my crossbite will cause me problems if this isn't corrected soon. I was in braces for a year and a 1/2 my first time around in braces in my early teens. I have been thinking about my options as well in regards to have surgery or not have surgery. I know someone on this board has told me about non-surgical expansion in regards to my situation as I'm still in my twenties. You might want to talk to an oral surgeon about it who specializes in Orthognathic Surgery.

I had a really BAD BAD BAD crossbite. So horrible I couldn't smile showing my teeth because it was too embarrassing.

I am an adult and got braces 1 year 3 months ago. I went to several orthos (like 5 orthos) before I chose the one I am with now.

They all told me (except for the guy I chose) that I'd have to either have two teeth pulled on top or get surgery. Supposedly that was the only way to fix the crossbite. I didn't want to lose 2 good teeth so surgery was what I had decided to do.

Then I met my ortho and he told me absolutely not! that he could fix my teeth without surgery (which he said was too extreme) or pulling good teeth (which he is against unless it's absolutely necessary). SO I chose him and my crossbite is fixed and my teeth are all pretty. They still have a little ways to go but if they took off the braces now I'd be more than happy. My teeth look good to me!
I have been in elastics/ rubberband for most of my time in braces but who cares! I still have my 2 beautiful teeth and I didn't have to go under the knife. I am super happy with the results so far!

If I were you, I'd look around and interview several orthos before you make your decision. I did and I am so glad I did. My ortho was the last one I saw so imagine what would've happened I had stopped after ortho 1 or 2! Scary!!!

I suppose it depends a lot, but I had a one-side cross bite as well and it is currently being fixed with elastics.
braced 07/02/08, braces off january 2010
sentence: 18 months, upper and lower damons + elastics
Bonded+essix retainers
