Concerned and in pain (with pic)

About 7 months ago, I had a spring put in my mouth to open up a space for a pre-molar that was coming in but had no room, as can be seen here...

(not the most pleasant picture, sorry lol)

Well the spring has done magic opening up that space, however, it has really created a tight squeeze. That banded molar is pushed up against my second molar rather tightly, and the band has DUG itself into my gum. It has recently (the past few days) caused some pain when I bite down.

Is this a normal occurence with springs and such? Or should I bring it up with my ortho?

Any feedback is appreciated.

Your gum may be inflamed. Maybe you have food trapped under the gum. Try to clean really well around that area, floss, waterpick if you have one, warm salt water rinses. Or maybe it's sore because you've had a lot of movement recently. Make sure the band is not loose. I don't have experience with springs specifically. If it doesn't start to improve in a few days I would call the office and ask for advice.

I don't think the band is supposed to dig into your gum and yes, there might be an inflammation.

The pain that you mention: does it feel like the pain from moving teeth or does it feel more like the gum?

If it seems to be the gum, I think there is little point in waiting. I would call in my ortho's office on Monday. If it is the usual pain from moving teeth, I'd wait.

It is definately coming from the gum. It may be inflammed. It isn't so much painful...but just sensitive to the touch.

I'm going to try to clean that area really well and see if it subsides.

I had a similar problem earlier in my treatment:

I used my waterpik and floss to clean the area really well and I also used a peroxide/water rinse(50/50). After a few days it improved a lot and was healed within a week. Try that but keep an eye on it and if it doesn't improve, I'd see your dentist just to make sure. Good luck! :D
