Hmm....i've got a gappy smile :(

#1 Post by skintz »

Well, obviously before braces, i didn't care about my smile-i didn't smile, and even when i did, i didn't show my teeth, so really, they didn't matter. But now i've got braces, and my teeth are straight, they do matter.
I've noticed that since my teeth have all aligned, they don't seem to all be the same length, you know, like in a 'hollywood smile'.
I know some people get tooth shaving, and others have teeth pulled futher downby bands and chains (i think) but, do you think i should mention this to my ortho at my next appointment, or do you think he knows what he's doing?
Its just, when i last went, he said my top teeth were 'done' and i'm not happy really cos i'll have a rubbish smile :( I'm being treated on the NHS and i don't want him to feel like i'm trying to tell him how to do his job...
Any help from you guys would be appreciated, i'm not sure how to tackle this...

You have every right to bring up your concern to your ortho. He might have told you they were done, but "done" seems relative when it comes to orthodontics - so bring it up to him or her.

Aren't you having jaw surgery though? I mean, adjustments and tuning might be made after that to your top jaw.

Yeah, i'm having lower jaw surgery in a few months, but surely that won't affect my top teeth?

Hi Meryaten,
Thanks for your thoughts-that last post had so many 'proper' words in it that i'm not sure i understood it!!
The gaps are between the teeth, but at the bottom (i.e. not along the gumline), the gaps are actually all the way to the gumline-they wouldn't be able to be closed with powerchains.
I think smiles look nicer if they're all sort of the same length, not like mine-i may try and post a pic so you can see what i mean :)

Braces wont fix bad looking teeth... They just put them in right way, and the older you are and the more worn your teeth were the worse is the end result....

But your teeth can be shaved or bonded to look better after braces are taken away.

i have one little tooth that never got as big as the rest of them. my ortho is leaving space around it so i can get a lumineer or something. i am thinking of telling him no. jesus, i just wanted to not be able to whistle between my rabbit teeth, not to look like i came out of a cookie mold.
but thats just me=)
if you have worries, dude its your money and your teeth, you need to be happy with them...i think youll feel better if you talk to your doc.
