ligature colors - which is the least noticeable?
Hi,
Just got my spacers put in this past Friday (I have ALL of my wisdom teeth, and therefore NO room to spare, so that = OWWWW!), and the braces are going on this Friday (8/29). I am getting clear on top and metal on the bottom...
I wanted to know which color I should get for my ligatures to have them be least noticeable (I like to keep the kooky colors for my hair, not on my teeth
javascript:emoticon(':D')
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Clear will be least noticeable---for awhile. They will stain from strongly colored food: ketchup, or any other tomato based item, mustard, coffee, and the worst offender-curry--which turns them florescent yellow. If you don't eat any of these things, then you may be OK. The only way to find out is to try them and see how long they last/how much the staining bothers you. Personally I have always used smoke colored on my clear brackets and been very happy with the stain resistance and the discreteness. I have both smoke ligs and powerchains on at the moment. They have been on for nearly 6 weeks and need to stay on for another 2. I'm quite impressed by their lack of discoloration as I have not been easy on them.

Hi Iceblonde,
Firstly, good luck for Friday!
I got my braces last Friday (22nd) - I looked at every page of the 'Lig colours' thread in prep for my brace-day. I knew I was only getting the uppers braced, and as I was having ceramic brackets, I wanted to go for something subtle to start with.
Staining was a big concern for me, and as I had heard so many things about clear ligs staining unless you are really careful about what you eat, I wanted to avoid them if possible. Thankfully my ortho had the full range of colours, inc all the ones that are supposed to be more stain resistant (these tend to be silver, smoke, pearl, periwinkle, or any of the more bold colours).
In the end I went for silver, just because smoke still seemed a little bit yellow for my liking. I am very pleased with how they look, and most people have said that they can hardly see my braces. Here's a picture for you (there are more in my braces story):
I get my lowers braced on 21st October, and I will definitely experiment with colours here! But like you, I wanted to keep the top quite plain, and I am very happy with my choice.
Hope that helps - read the colours thread, it's got some great pics!

Good luck on Friday!!!
I have ceramic uppers and metal lowers. As far as ligs go, I have had wire ties on the uppers from the beginning. I'm a big time coffee drinker, so I was worried about staining. I had a silver powerchain on my uppers which I didn't like and I had it changed to clear in between appointments. My ortho doesn't offer smoke, pearl or light silver so it wasn't an option. I just had an adjustment today and I have a clear powerchain across from 6-6. I'm sure that in two weeks, I'll be in for a change.

Hi IceBlonde,
Good luck with getting your braces on this Friday. I had no problems when they placed my braces and hope your appt. goes as smoothly as mine did.
The lig color that worked very well with me was opal blue - it was clear with a very slight tinch of baby blue in it - not very noticeable at all. I didn't have problems with staining, but was also good about rinsing my mouth with water if I ate something with color, such as spaghetti. I don't eat Indian food so I have no experience with that. I tried clear ligs in the past, and it was so clear that it seemed more noticeable - I hope that makes sense to you. I always made it a point to get colored ligs on the back teeth because I was the only one that saw them and I enjoy colors. I even got opal blue powerchains and that worked out very well for me. My ortho asst. was very helpful when choosing a color for the ligs and she was the one that told me about the opal blue. You might tell your ortho/asst. of what your needs are and ask for their opinion about the color of the ligs. Also, my ortho and his assistants told me several times that if my ligs became discolored and I needed them changed, just to call the office. I was thankful I never had to take them up on this offer, but almost did one time, but was luckythat when I brushed my teeth the toothpaste removed the stain.
Keep us posted and enjoy your appt.

I did not have clear braces I had traditional metal ones. However, I found that silver was the least noticable of all the colors I tried. In fact when I used silver on my teeth the braces seemed to all but disappear and were barely noticeable at all. The other benefit to silver was that they never stained for me.
