Day 2--Hungry
I finally got my upper braces only yesterday and I am so hungry. I just can not eat anything without it bothering me. Really felling down right now. What did I get myself into, I am 31 years old.

Ohh, I remember that feeling on day 2! The discomfort didn't last that much longer for me, I got hungry enough that I just said "screw this, i'm eating!" and chewing actually helped ease the pain quite quickly!
All Metal Uppers and Lowers - brackets placed with OrthoCAD
Braces on 2/1/2007, Removed 2/13/2008, now in Essix retainers.
I tend to think well if I have to deal with this, I'll have my favourite food...which happens to be mashed potatoes...with tons of butter! Things like chocolate mousse are nice too!! Or make up some soup with some nice veg (fresh asparagus around now, yummy) and put some crackers in it..they go all nice and mushy.
Give it a few days, you'll soon be back to eating fairly normally!
Personally I'd stay away from the steak until you are used to your braces. Though personally I haven't had any yet. I certainly don't baby my teeth but having had archwire slip out of the back tube a few times, I am going to be more careful.

Hi saintsfan77,
Boy I remember those days. It was only five months ago. Anyway, there is plenty that you can eat. Soup, pasta, mashed potatoes, chicken, eggs, it's all a matter of getting alittle creative. It totally not worth starving yourself!
Feel better. Take an OTC pain reliver 30 minutes before eating, that may help.

Just wanted to add that back when I got braced I could not eat normally. I will never forget when a braced friend bit into a cookie right in front of me, and I almost fell off my chair in disbelief!!!
I read over and over that if I just hung in there I could eat normally in just a little while, but I never truly believed it.
It did take a while, I won't lie. Due to having my arches braced about 4 months apart, the first 8 months for me were really about careful eating.
I got to a point eventually where even with a little sorenes after adjustments I was able to eat chips, hamburgers (biting into them) sandwiches, steak, EVERYTHING. Yes, I have even been biting cookies too.
sorry if my post is making you hungry, I remember the feeling. Just wanted to be sure you know that it WILL get better.

i remember going out for supper a week and a half after being braced. i was a little scared but then realized that i was able to eat pasta fairly well when i was at home, so i stuck with a pasta dish that had bite sized sausage peices in it. ohhh it was delicious, i also ordered bread that was super soft so it made it fairly easy to eat, I was actually able to tear the bread off by biting it and not braking it off like i had to do when i first attempted eating bread with braces. Like everyone else has said, it just takes a little time to get used to the braces. It took ohhh about3 week s to eat basically normal! the first few days were rough cuz i couldn't bite down at all cuz it hurt so bad and i think i was scared that if i bite down on something i'd break a bracet. I eventually gained confidence and starting biting down on things and boy like some people have said the pains started to go away!!
so try and keep your sprits up, its gets better ever day!

soft comfort foods, easy to cook: pick your favorite soup, chicken noodle? tomato?, clam chowder?
make a simple mac and cheese (velveta and shells is very easy and smooth) and overcook the pasta a little so it's very soft.
Make an omelet or scrambled eggs
treat yourself to a milk shake
in a couple days when you're dying for a burger but can't face the chew go for a bbq or sloppy joe, (much softer but still satisfying!)
fish (salmon or flounder) poached in broth or wine with herbs
mashed potatoes and whatever you like with them.
long cooked stews have soft meat and veggies...do up a crock pot stew or chili.
don't go hungry, you have lots of options
melt in your mouth pancakes.

The feeling down is worse than the pain, and I don't think they are totally related.
The night when I first got braces I tried to eat spagetti. I couldn't do it because it was awkward and sore, and I started to cry i was so miserable!
Now if I have any tenderness, and even when I get an adjustment and it's quite sore, I just eat through the pain and it goes away! I don't feel down at all because I'm used to it now.
The shock of having braces for the first time is can be very upsetting I think. Soon you'll be eating everything you want and find yourself excited watching your teeth move and straighten up. Just remember why you're doing it!

I remember having a similar experience the first night. I came home and my mom had cut up watermelon peices and i was all eager and excited to have some. Unfortunately i couldn't bite down at all cuz i was so sore so i was unable to have the watermelon cubes. i almost started to cry cuz watermelon is one of my fav summer fruits!! Brushing my teeth for the first couple of times was interesting to cuz it felt so weird. Plus i was't able to use my electric toothbrush they had given me cuz it had to be charged a certain way before it could be used, so i was stuck using a mini manual travel toothbrush that was made specifically for bracets! i cried the 1st night i brushed my teeth cuz i was in so much pain and it felt so weird. Now its so much better and it doens't feel weird any more!!! I'm back to normal eating again. haha sometimes it doesn't even feel like i have braces on. I have to admit that when adjustment day comes around i can feel them for the first few days, but its not as bad as when i first got my braces on! thatz definetly for sure!! So hang in there!! its bound to get better!Lola wrote:The feeling down is worse than the pain, and I don't think they are totally related.
