just got my braces on! eek =( x x x

Hayy.

Im 17, nearly 18 and just had a brace put on 2 days ago.

I had a brace when i was 10 till i was about 12, and had a bit of a rough time at school with my appearances (bullies etc).
Anyhoo i need an op on my jaw coz my top jaw has grown too much and my bottom jaw not enough..giving me an 11mm overbite. nice. lol

so erm yh i just had my brace put on and feeling pretty upset. I have even less confidence then i had before, im like lookin at the floor when i walk around coz i dont want to catch anyones eye etc. And ive kinda lost the appetite for clubbing now coz where i live everything seems to be based on looks...and brace face is not the desired look!! haha

Dont really know why im writing, but i dont know anyone my age with a brace, only like 13 years olds...so its hardly the same.
And i dont know anyone whose having a jaw operation.

So umm just thought id write to see if anyone has anything to say, advice etc etc...??

Sorry for the ramble!

love amy x x x x

ps im also new to this site, so dont actually know if ive posted this in the right place!!! ...sorryyy!!! x

Welcome Amy!

I know how you feel. It can be a big shock when you get braces on. You will adjust, it will take time, just try and forget about your braces and take it one day at a time. The time does fly, honest.

Sorry for the bad experience you had when you were younger. You're a young adult now and people won't bully you.

You might not feel like clubbing etc right now and a lot of the board members would probably tell you to get right in there. I won't though. I think you could look at doing other stuff which might even develop yourself, e.g. if you like taking photos maybe now would be a good time to take some time out and learn Photoshop. Before you know it, the time will fly and you'll go clubbing without thinking about it.

Also, if self-confidence is an issue, now's a great time to look at overall things, for example a new hair cut, skincare, experimenting with make up, clothes etc

Take care.

Tigerlily xx

Think of it as work in progress.

Hi Amy

You weren't doing anything - now you are!

Your teeth will better - you are someone who doesn't put up with what you have been given, you want more and are prepared to do something about it.

I thought one of the good things about braces is that they don't really make you look worse, just different, but going in the right direction.

Try not to hide yourslf, you are far better than you can ever imagine at the moment - lift your face up and see the world as you are, it can only get better.

It's difficult I know, but people you have never met before will accept you as you are and then before long, you will be able to beam at them with a lovely smile unencumbered with metal, brackets and wires. Sometimes I see people staring at my braces and so I grin more broadly, grin for me please.

i'm totally with ya, i miss biting into apples with my teeth. now i gotta cut them up into little peices ah well its better then knocking bracets off and such! ah well, lol. I'm so used to cutting things up smaller now that it doens't really bug me now. Sometimes it can be time consuming but like i said before its better then knocking off bracets!

From my perspective, you are young! I wish I had my teeth done at 18 instead of 40. :)

But at any age, braces suck, but think about the outcome and that should make you feel better! :D
It's never too late to fix your smile! :)
