Is Anything Poking You?

This is the question I'm asked by the technician at my orthodontist's office. So of course, when asked this, I move my tongue, mouth, cheeks, lips all over the place to make absolutely sure that nothing is poking me after the adjustment. Of course, nothing is. Everything feels absolutely great.

Then I get home.

Now the wire is suddenly poking me in the cheek. Stupid wire.

Today was my first adjustment. I got the top wire extended all the way across now with little rubber tubes over the wire where teeth used to be. I still miss my teeth. My five-year-old is still appalled that my teeth were removed and thrown away. I let my three-year-old pick the lig colors for my bottom braces: neon green. Having read other stories on how pokey wires can be awful, I made sure I checked all my brackets for em before leaving the chair at my last appointment. Like you, the moment I got home, my cheek got caught on a pokey wire exiting my molar band...... and a few days after the appointment, all molar bands have pokey wires

I can't call in an "emergency" appointment so I've taken to waxing the offending corners.

I've played safe with purple ligs all the way :P

Movement can happen very quickly after an adjustment, so the fact that the wires weren't poking you when you were in the chair - and they were by the time you got home - is not necessarily the ortho's fault. But it is a pain in the butt when it happens.....and an even bigger pain when it happens in the airport lounge as you're due to fly out of town for 3 weeks, which is what happened to me once.....not fun at all.

im month 9.

things poke me alot. as things move around the wires move too. usually not to your advantage. they stick out the back and poke you a bit.

i have fat cheeks and its worse for use with fat cheeks. im thin and not over weight, god who could be with braces. but i have a round face. i have had issues with wires poking me alot lately as things move around.

go back and have them trimed. i do. your paying for it. dont be uncomfortable.

sad thing is i have a long way to go.

got tightened up today. ouch. im sore.

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I felt so dumb for telling them "No, nothing's poking me". Then it suddenly starts to later. My ortho's office is wonderful, so all I have to do is call and they'll see me to fix the wire. I called before and they took me in same-day. This morning it's acting like it doesn't want to constantly poke me, so I'll see what it does. I'm starting to learn that nothing is consistent or predictable in braces..

Im 22 months in, and things still poke me

Ive found, the best thing to do is just put a blob of wax on the offending poking bit, as the next day things may have shifted again.

If its really long tho, or really bothering you, im sure your ortho will clip it, this takes them literally seconds.

Suddenly having a poking wire right after an adjustment is absolutely normal. I've had several. Don't worry at all about calling your ortho (even if it's only hours after your adjustment). They expect things like this to happen and really do care about your comfort. Plus it takes them only maybe a minute to fix the situation.
