Removing the glue from teeth when debanding

#1 Post by beth1966 »

Was discussing this tonight with someone and she asked me how the actual enamel of your teeth is not comromised when they remove the glue from your teeth? And why they can't use a solvent of some sort rather then grinding it off?

But I am wondering how they salvage your enamel?

Not sure I'm qualified to answer this as I'm not even braced yet  but I did have my fixed expander removed a short while ago. It seemed to me the way they got the cement off was basically by the same method a dentist would use to remove plaque. Our teeth seem to survive that procedure OK!

By the way, I've had a quick look at your story and seen that I'm just ahead of you. I get my spacers put in on Apr 30th and the brackets on May 7th. :)

Hi Beth,

I'm not really qualified to answer this either, but just from experience, when my bracket was popped off, all the assistant did was manually scrap off the excess bonding material and my tooth felt pretty smooth. Then she prepped it again for rebonding.

I asked this same question at one of my adjustments. I dreaded getting my braces off, thinking I have 20 some teeth to get that glue off. I was told that the tool they use does not compromise your enamel when they take the glue off. During my whole treatment, I've thought that I should invent a solvent to dissolve the glue. I can't believe it hasn't been invented yet!
