cant find the info by search even though I am SURE it is out there

I have seen lots of discussion about teeth feeling loose on here in the past ............ and felt it .... even though teeth not actually moving.

However today one of my bicuspids is actually loose .... when I press it, either by finger or by closing teeth together, it moves up and down

As does the bracket of course and therefore the wire.

Its too late at the mo to ring ortho although I will do in the morning ......... but having had great advice from here before ...... please, is this a cause for concern ?


This is like my bad dream coming true . teeth falling out

should I avoid chewing on that side so it can settle down ?

Teeth have to get loose to move!

Okay, I have a scientific explanation here! When you or I or anyone typically think of our teeth, we think of them being attached to the jaw bones. They're actually not. The teeth are attached to the perodontal ligaments, which are attached to the jawbone. Cool huh? This is what allows our teeth to be moved. The pressure on the teeth from the braces causes the bone around them to weaken, the periodontal ligaments to let up a bit, and then to regrow and solidify in the end. So for your tooth to be a little loose is to be expected, but I would still call the ortho if its more so than usual, which it must be for you to have noticed. And jt2lang is right- the arch wire and bracket will hold it in until you can see the ortho! I hope that helped a little!

thanks folks ..... it does help to ask stuff on here when things happen that are not as expected

I realise that they do need to get a little bit loose in order to move .... just did not expect to see a very noticable up and down movement (even though that one .... along with its neighbours ....does need to come down a little out of the gum to get in line with the other side !!!!!

I thought I'd just give it a day or too .... but this evening the one next to it is jiggling up and down too.

There no pain but there is certainly and occasional "odd" feeling

so think I will just give ortho a call tomorrow as I don t have an adjustment for another two weeks.

I know they wont fall out as such .... but wondered if the pressure might be better kept off them to let them "settle" and solidify a wee bit.

I have a tooth that has always been loose, and they actually have to have me bite down on cotton to ease the pain at adjustments. I am assuming lol.. one day it wont be loose anymore. but no worries im sure its just like mine and normal.

Tazzle, I hope you post what your ortho advises....I'm newly braced and this sort of stuff is a little scarey to read!

please dont worry emperor ........ feel a bit of a duffer now as the worst wobbly was actually a CROWN ...... DOH I had forgotton that it was one as its such a good one . That was soon cemented back in


...... The other less loose one IS a tooth but its only a little wobbly and ortho says its ok and will settle soon. Re applied the wire and I am back in for my normal appontment to see the consultant ortho ( he deals with all the adults ).


These are all the little things they often forget to teel us about ..... what merits a visit and what doesnt

eg dont know it it was missed or whether it fell off between visit and hom e.... but I am missing a lig now on a front tooth !!!!!!!!!

I dare not go back ...... aaaaarrrrgggghhhhhhh

the trials and tribulations of braces and wantint to do it right but wwithout being an unecessary pain in the a** for the ortho

whew, I bet you are relieved. thanks for posting and keeping us updated....as you say, it's hard to know what is a true 'emergency' and what is just bothering people unnecessarily.

I have only had my braces for a week and am already feelng them loose My two bottom front teeth were turned in slightly before braces now they seem to be loose and turning in the opposite direction. They are not real loose but they do seem to get "stuck" in a different position and I feel pressure til it moves back on it's own. Seems my 6 on top and 6 on bottom are all kinda loose. I thought that was mighty early to be moving since I have only had braces for 9 days!
Should I call ortho on Monday or just wait it out. I'm afraid to brush down hard and still cannot bite down on those front teeth, use only my back teeth to eat my cut up burger with a fork I know it will get better soon!
