Retruded Lower Jaw

#1 Post by GB »

Is it possible to fix this or at least improve this without surgery?

I have a retruded lower jaw which makes my teeth stick out. I do not fancy having surgery, is there any other way?

Ditto Meryaten's reply.

However, it might be possible to get a compromise result by having extractions on the top teeth and the front ones pulled back. It's not addressing the problem of your retrognathic lower jaw, but can camouflage it to a degree by getting rid of the "buck tooth" appearance.

Have you been to see an ortho yet?

I had an underbite and my ortho said it would require surgery to be fixed. I chose not to do the surgery and just go with braces. I had my 4 wisdom teeth removed along with 2 extractions on the bottom. My results are great! Im not out of braces yet but the underbite is no longer and issue and my ortho seems to be surprised and pleased with the results. But Im sure every case is different.

Thanks for the replies.

I've not been to see an ortho yet but I did see one about 10 years ago and was told I needed surgery. I am now 29 and I've decided to get something done.

The weird thing is that a lot of my close family have this small lower jaw but without the appearence of teeth sticking out.

Well thanks for the help, at least I have a few options to present to my ortho.

Cheers

This was the problem that I had. It is a family trait inherited from my father. The first option was to have surgery to advance my lower jaw but I declined because I was not really looking to have a Hollywood smile. It seemed rather extreme to "fix something that was not really broke".

The second option was to have upper extractions to make the upper arch smaller and reduce the overjet. This was the option that I chose and I am very pleased with the results.

I think your possibilities are:

1. jaw surgery
2. extraction of couple of teeth and pulling front teeth back
3. widening your archs and therefore avoiding extractions, and finally pull front teeth back.

Voila!

I have the 3. possibility. I have had my braces for a year and I have to admit that my overjet is the same as it was before. And I just cant see my bitie getting better...
