Veneers for Life???

#1 Post by KatieBug »

About 3 years ago I had porcelin veneers put on my two teeth to lengthen their appearence, so it would take away from the fang look. I am going to be getting braced soon and was curious if I should take them off. My ortho says no but I kind of want them off because I am going to be getting my teeth straightened and I feel that it may be fine. Are veneers absoultly permanent or can I remove them? :?:

It is my understanding that a bit of the enamel is etched off to prepare teeth for veneers. That would, I would think, prohibit you from removing them and going back to your natural teeth. If you are unhappy with their appearance you could talk to your dentist about redoing them to be more natural in accordance with your orthodontic work. My ortho, dentist and oral surgeon are working closely together as I am having a porcelain veneer and an implant done after my braces come off. I hope this helps.

I've had veneers on my 2 top front teeth for many years, but I can clearly remember my dentist filing my natural teeth underneath before putting the veneers over them. My natural teeth would look very unsightly if the veneers were removed.

My concern when beginning orthodontic treatment was that my veneers were so big and made my already protruding teeth stick out even further. My ortho assured me that he would sort them and file them if necessary afterwards. However, now my teeth have been moved and they are more or less in their right place, the veneered teeth look so much smaller and I think any final filing/shaping will be very minimal. I hope my input helps some. Have a chat to your ortho first, he will know best.
