crown: gold or ceramic?

#1 Post by vtrieu »

i'm going to be getting a crown soon for one of my bottom molars and have the choice between gold or ceramic. i've been doing some reading and so far i'm leaning towards gold since the tooth isnt visible. But with braces i'm going to need to have a band on the molar, this is the part that i forgot to ask when i was at the ortho office. does the band go all the way around the tooth, if so how does it go between the molars on each side?

will the gold crown be sensitive to hot/cold? i had a root canal on that molar so there's no more nerves but what about the gums?

I don't have any crowns myself, but I have heard that the gold type is less likely to crack... this is according to our dentist but I don't know the other benefits, and if it isn't visible, I think it would be kinda neat to have a gold chunk in my mouth :P If they actually cost the same... You can be the king/queen with your gold crown! I'm a dork.

I wonder what the other specific pros/cons are for gold or ceramic.

I'm assuming the crown is going to go on a root canal? In which case there should be no sensitivity at all right? Prolly best to call and ask your ortho about the molar band/crown issue and see if theres any preference.

My OH had a porcelain crown (which cracked) replaced with a gold one on the recommendation of a dentist (it was a second molar).

I have one crown (porcelain) and it has a buccal tube/bracket on it, as opposed to a molar band. The bracket did come off on day 3, was reattached with different glue and has stayed put ever since.

Gold is the dental material with hardness and wear characteristics most closely identical to enamel. It is less than aesthetic, but a well done gold crown will likely last much longer than a PFM. PFM's are very good restorations, but do have some wear downsides long term. It is up to you to decide if the "look" of a gold crown is acceptable enough to you.

I wouldn't worry about sensitivity on anything if you have had root canal therapy. A posterior crown is less likely to have the margins set below the gum line so the potential for imitation is also less. And yes, most crowned teeth, especially molars will get a band that slips around the tooth. The teeth will be separated with a rubber spacer (looks like a small donut) that is stuck between the teeth. Some time later (can be < 1 hour or a few days depending on the patient and office) a band is slid over the tooth.

Best,
Rory

Meryaten - does the gold onlay irratate your gums often? how common are allergic reactions to gold crowns?

i was also told that the gold crown will cost about 150 more than the ceramic, does this sound right?

i was quoted around 1000 for the crown but that's in canadian dollars so i guess it's about average. so when people say gold crown it's cast gold?
is there an dental calculator for canadian cities?
