You'll most likely have a hawley for your bottom teeth as well (just assuming they'd match top and bottom, but maybe not...) because a permanent retainer only holds the front teeth in place and does nothing for the back teeth. A regular, removable retainer will help keep all your teeth in line.

I have both upper and lower hawleys and a permanent retainer on my bottom teeth. But, all orthos are different, so I'm sure you'll get different answers.

hi brace_face_2006
I have not had a good time with bonded retainers. I got my braces off(for the 2nd time) in june of '06. I had a hawley on top and a bonded retainer on the bottom.
Anways, in the middle of september, i went to the ortho and my bonded retainer did nothing. My bottom teeth moved forward and started to crowd. So i had to get braces again(free of charge) and i just got them off a couple of weeks ago.
So this time, i went with a hawley on bottom. and it is MUCH better. It just is a little harder to talk with at the beginning.
hope this helps.

I've done alot of research before getting braces and I seem to be much more happier to get nothing but hawleys, I found permenent retainers aren't as effective.
