I have to second Karen's thoughts here. Your level of anxiety seems to be out of porportion to the actual problem. You need to see someone about your anxiety.

Vincent, you're letting your internal negative 'chatterbox' run away with you. Things are rarely as bad as you imagine them to be. What chance do you give yourself if you always expect the worst imaginable scenario?

I think you really should go and see your dentist. I know it's hard to take that first step, but no matter how bad you think it will be once you go to the dentist, not going is worse. The problem will only escalate. I think the decay would have to be very severe for the dentist to even consider extraction, and I think the pain (not to mention the smell) of the decaying tooth would drive you into the chair way before things get to this stage.

You may not even need 'filling' for the 'cavity'. I discovered a small dark mark on the back of a tooth exposed by extractions (whilst poring over my healing sockets with a makeup mirror!). I went into see the dentist straight away. After congratulating me on managing to even find the mark, he explained that it was decalcification which is part of the process that leads to cavities. Since we'd caught it early on, I didn't even need the tooth filled. He performed what he called an 'etch and bond'. No anaesthesia necessary, no pain, just a little noise like when you get your teeth cleaned, and ten minutes later, I was good to go. Cavity avoided! Cheaper than a filling too.

And if it is a cavity that requires filling, so what? I don't mean to belittle your concerns, but it's certainly not the worst thing that could ever happen. OK, it's not nice, but the sooner you have the tooth attended to, the smaller it will be, and the less invasive the fix will be. Wouldn't you rather have a plain old cavity filled than endure a root canal procedure? If for your wallet's sake if nothing else!

Go to your dentist, Vincent. You may want to look into finding a dentist that is sympathetic to your anxieties. Mine is a treasure at calming me down and soothing my nerves. And there's always Laughing Gas!

Hi Vincent,

I am wondering how you know that you have a cavity? I assume that you are talking about the area of the tooth near the gum line? You mentioned that you have not been the most diligent with flossing, it is possible that you are feeling calculus (mineralized plaque) and not decay. Regardless of if it is decay or calculus it should be evaluated by a professional.

I understand your apprehension, I have patients that are incredibly timid and scared of the dentist. But preventative care is the way to go. If you have a small problem now, then it can be dealt with in a minimally invasive way. But if you let it go too long it can develop into a large problem. The link you posted is unfortunately all to common. Decay starts and spreads slowly, but if you let it go it can turn into a large problem and as you mention you want to save your tooth. Do yourself a favor and have a Dentist check it out. There is no harm in having a consultation, you will be surprised how painless and simple dentistry can be. It is not fun like going to dinner or a play/movie/sporting event. But it is something you should do for yourself. You only get one set of teeth, so be good to yourself and take care of them and they will serve you for many years. If you have any specific questions about what to expect or anything else feel free to PM/IM/Email me.

Best,
Rory

Hey KK, yeah i went to the dentist the other day and i was so scard, you know when you go and you kinda expect the worse, i was waiting for my name to be called and then i went in and explained my though and he has a quick look, got the pointy thing and was poking the "cavatie" i though i has and said "its not a cavatie" its calculus (spell) just hard plaque, i said do i need a filling and he said no, i was so relieved i was gonna cry lol, he just scraped it off and told me its all fine now, but the thing is, wheneven i see him he always seems to be in a rush when its me, maybe it cos im on NHS (free health service) or he just dont like me because when i was younger i think i may hav ebeat him up whilst he was drilling out my teeth, any who, i hope its sorted now. on where the teeth were extracted it kinda feels tender, when chewed gum on it it fels weird, nto very painful just weird, i dont chew on that site just in case i get pain, i try to avoid chewing all together but thats anohter storey!!!

thank you guys for being so pessimistic (spell), i am really grateful you guys take the time to write for me, thanks again
